PPEs for CMC Vellore, India

Nearly 10,000 patients make their way each day from all over India to the nonprofit Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMC) in Vellore, Southern India, for top-level care, provided at a subsidized rate or at no cost to poor people. Now, CMC's doctors, nurses and allied health professionals are in urgent need of our help. India’s Covid-19 patient numbers are spiking and healthcare providers are in dire need of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Please join me in raising funds ASAP for N95 respirator masks, gowns, goggles, gloves and other PPE for these brave professionals who are on the front lines, risking their all.

This cause is personal to me. In 2018, my mother was in a car crash on the Bangalore-Madras highway — the doctors couldn’t find a pulse when she was brought by ambulance to CMC. They revived her, stabilized her, and performed five surgeries. The accident had left her a quadriplegic and we lost her after 21 days in the ICU. I was there with her day and night, and I saw and experienced firsthand the compassion and humanity of the doctors, nurses and technicians. No one was turned away because they were poor, all were extended the same dignity that every human being deserves. I talked to other women — one whose relative was recovering well after an iron rod from a bullock cart spoke had pierced through his stomach; another whose brother was in surgery — she had come here a couple of times before, she said, and always went back home with some money left, rather than incurring medical debt like many did at for-profit hospitals. Economically-impoverished people who had accompanied sick relatives slept in the open courtyard, placing their faith in the doctors and in the system. They believed in it, and so do I. I think of these women as my sisters, and a few of my mother’s doctors have become dear friends.”

All donations are 100% tax deductible and 100% of the dollars received will be sent to CMC Vellore, India, via the Vellore CMC Foundation, New York.

Please offer your support and help me in making a difference. No amount is too small.
