The Black Literacy Fund

Everyday I see black children misrepresented, misunderstood and underrepresented within the educational system. Classroom displays depict everyone but them. A Eurocentric curriculum teaches everything but their TRUE history. Books they read reflect nothing of them. Black children are left wondering where they fit in in this world.

I wish to provide the beginning of a safe haven for my students by when the new academic year begins by having a library of black books. Books that teach their history. Books that they can see themselves in. Books that give them reasons to be proud of their culture and their heritage. Books that teach all children within the school to love and respect all cultures, all colours, all orientations, all religions...all humans.

I’d like to start the library within my class so that there are books children can choose from for independent reading times, books they can choose to bring home to read with family and also ones they can pick from for whole class reading.  When I have enough books I would then like to open the library up to more children in the school so that they can borrow and return books and with multiple copies of certain books I could then start a book club with the older year groups.

I would also like to book a workshop with The Black Curriculum. They go to different schools using their own resources and provide various programmes and consultations during the school term which helps promote inclusivity by teaching Black British History.

Education is the key to a brighter future. Help me to continue to educate our youth.
