Danvers Massachusetts is home to one of less than 400 first period homes still standing in the United States today.  The Porter-Bradstreet house was built in 1665, and is one of the few remaining connections to a part of our country’s past.  Unfortunately it faces the possibility of being demolished in the very near future by developers who are interested in the 2.83 acre property.

Instead of watching this beautiful and historic homestead face demolition, members of the Danvers community and beyond have formed the Preservation League of Essex County in order to save pieces of our local history.  We believe that it is each new generation’s responsibility to be the custodians of the treasures of our past and to ensure that future generations will have the fortune of experiencing them as we have.  Funds raised will be used to help with the down payment and closing costs to acquire the property from the current owner.

Beyond simply saving the property, the goal of our Preservation League is to ultimately give back to the people of Danvers and Essex County by creating an Arts Education Center within the Porter-Bradstreet home.  The Porter-Bradstreet Education Center will be a place where children and adults can come to learn more about art, music, theater and agriculture in the unique setting of a first period New England property.

While our immediate fundraising need is aimed at purchasing the property, our long-term plan for the homestead is to make the Porter-Bradstreet Education Center a self-sustaining non-profit, providing both the access to education and to the local history to the people of Danvers and beyond. The efforts of not only the Preservation League but of all those who help to save this home will be ensuring that the property will never again face the threat of demolition.
