Porky's Wrist Surgery

Donation protected
My name is Joanne. I'm a friend of Porky, and her owner Simon, in Fairbanks, Alaska.  I'm appealing to his friends, family, and possibly a few dog-loving strangers, for some financial support to help Porky get a much needed surgery.  The surgery to repair Porky's injured wrist is estimated to cost $5500 total, and I am hopeful we can all raise enough to help with at least half the costs. There is a vet surgeon coming from Anchorage to Fairbanks the beginning of November who can perform the surgery here if we can raise the funds.

Simon has a family of sled dogs that started 10 years ago with two female Alaskan Huskies, Smoky and Porky.  Porky is an incredibly athletic and intelligent mushing dog, and a special partner and friend to Simon.  She is currently his main lead dog on his family team of 16 total dogs. She is also his summer running buddy, and loves to ride in his fishing canoe, and any activity that involves getting the wind in her fur. She lives to run and mush, often even slipping out of her own collar so she can run free!  She's so smart, and naughty ;-). She's also well known for having the fastest tongue in Alaska, and can clean your nostrils out before you have a chance to notice.

A few weeks ago Porky was on a free run with Simon and a couple other dogs up in the mountains surrounding Fairbanks. This is a run that they do often in the summer while Simon is training for his running races, and helping the dogs stay fit in summer.  Porky has been on this run many, many times. Unfortunately, during this particular run, Porky fell behind, and Simon went back to find her on the trail with a significant injury to her left front paw. It was evident immediately that she could not bear any weight on her leg, and that she was in a lot of pain.  Simon carried Porky (65 lbs) all the way down the mountain.

Simon has a  friend and fellow musher that is a vet.  She has evaluated Porky extensively over the past few weeks and determined there is extensive damage to the ligaments and soft tissue in Porky's wrist. It is certain her career as a lead mushing dog is over.  But if this injury is not repaired, she will never even run again. And this dog LOVES to run.  To see her in this current state of injury is heart breaking. It is impossible to imagine her limping through the rest of her life. Though she may never mush again, she NEEDS to be able to walk/run.

Simon is humble, and lives a simple life. He has built his own cabins, and lives a debt free life. He is a carpenter and works for himself.  When he hires people to help him  he often pays his employees more than he earns himself on a job.  He is an idealist, and does not work for wealth, but for subsistence.  If he can build it himself, he will.  If he can fix it himself, he will. He does not have a large savings account, but he has recently had some large expenses for his own medical care, and he does not like to ask for help.  So in this case, I am asking for him.  Especially to anyone who has met Porky and/or enjoyed a ride with Simon's beautiful team.   If we can all pool together to help Porky get this ankle repair she will be able to live out the last of her years as the beautiful free spirit she is.  If we can raise at least half the cost that would be great.

Thank you!  Please share this with anyone you think will appreciate Porky and her story.
