Teaching Tolerance: World Religions at Winthrop High School

Donation protected

Teaching tolerance requires building relationships and cultivating understanding between people of diverse ethnic and religious viewpoints. To that end, Winthrop High School, a small school in a working-class community just outside of Boston, will pilot a course titled Introduction to World Religions for the 2012-2013 school year. Within two weeks of the course announcement, almost 80 students signed up - a testament to our teens' eagerness to understand "the other." Unfortunately, the school has no money for textbooks or any other course necessities.

I am seeking $3,000 to purchase used copies of Living Religions by Mary Pat Fisher ($2100), bring in religious figures and scholars to share their unique worldviews, and take four trips to Boston-area houses of worship. I need to purchase the books before the end of August.

Please consider donating to the students of Winthrop. Your contribution will play a vital role in building a class and a generation of tolerant, compassionate young thinkers.
