Please Help the Farley Family Heal

As many of you know, my brother-in-law AJ had emergency open heart surgery in the early hours of May 30th 2018. While removing the vein from his leg to set up him up on bypass before the surgery, he coded and was down for 10 minutes on the operating table before successfully being put on bypass. The life-saving efforts continued for 9.5 hours following that, much longer than the anticipated 6-8 hours for his surgery.

Due to the amount of blood transfusions and blood products needed to keep him stable, he was extremely swollen following the surgery. This swelling restricted blood flow to his left calf and foot, and despite multiple efforts to save any tissue possible, they ultimately ended up amputating his leg above the knee. This will result in a drastically different lifestyle for AJ once he’s recovered, including prosthesis and a wheelchair as well as intensive PT and rehabilitation.

He was unresponsive for 10 days post-surgery, needing 24/7 dialysis and a ventilator to help him breathe.  He also lives with COPD, so he is still living with a temporary tracheostomy that was needed for the ventilator. We are hopeful the tracheostomy will be removed soon so he can start speech therapy to be able to communicate with us again.

During the past 43 days, he has fought hard against infections, gone through many procedures after the initial heart surgery, and is still currently on dialysis for his kidneys (which are not functioning on their own). He is currently in a live-in rehab (as of 7/6) which is a 35 minute drive for his wife and family members to visit him. He is not fully coherent as they believe he suffered from several mini-strokes and is unable to move on his own due to the loss of muscle mass. On the positive side, he has started to move his arms and mouth words in an effort to communicate his thoughts and feelings. He has an extremely long road ahead of him - as do my sister and nephew, who suffers from a behavioral disorder that makes this even harder to deal with emotionally and intellectually.

To compound the stress and worry of this terrible situation, Kim was recently informed that they need to find a new place to live over the next few months due to FEMA tearing down their rental (and several other homes on the street) in order to help with the flooding in the area. In addition to that unfortunate news, the vehicle my sister was driving broke down and needs a new transmission.  Kim has the biggest heart and is always smiling and trying to help others even when she is down herself. No matter what, she is always there and tries to do whatever she can for anybody who crosses her path. She is trying to take care of the bills, my nephew, all the calls in regards to AJ and the normal day to day things, and yet she continues to go to work each day and tries to make a difference where she can. She is an extremely strong woman, but even God’s angels need support once in a while. If you are able to help, thank you. If not, a share helps just as much and we thank you for that as well.  Our family greatly appreciates every donation, share and the time you took to read this. God Bless!
