Help Support Jenny, Bryant, Zoey, and Hailey.

Hello, my name is Alisha, and I work with Jenny and have her 2 year old daughter, Hailey, in care at our childcare center.

In the middle of last week, Bryant and Hailey both got sick with the same symptoms causing them to seek medical care. They both were diagnosed with a stomach bug and diverticulitis and sent home. Their symptoms continued. Monday of this week, Jenny took Hailey to her primary care doctor. Her doctor told Jenny to take her directly to Helen Devos Children's Hospital Emergency Room. Hailey was admitted to the hospital Monday evening and was diagnosed with E. Coli. Hailey developed a rare complication of the E. Coli virus called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). HUS is a rare but serious illness caused by the E. Coli infection that affects the kidneys and blood clotting functions. As a result, Hailey wasn't producing any urine output even though she was hooked up to IVs and given meds to promote urine output. Hailey's body started retaining the fluids, so she was sedated Tuesday (8/9/22) and put on dialysis. Hailey has remained sedated since yesterday morning and is on dialysis. Hailey has Stage 1 Kidney Injury, and they are waiting to see if her kidneys will start functioning again. If they do not, a kidney transplant could be in the future for this sweet little one. Hailey has had one more setback today; she had to be given a blood transfusion because her blood pressure is too low, her red blood cells are breaking down, and her hemoglobin is also too low.

Jenny and Bryant are staying at the hospital with Hailey and are unable to work. There isn't a precise discharge date for Hailey at the moment, as they are waiting to see how her body recovers. Hailey’s older sister, Zoey, has been staying with relatives since everyone got sick and is surely missing her family as well!
