Five years ago I moved across country to take on two kids who desperately needed help. My wife and I did everything necessary to get here, did all of the things, overcame all of the hurdles...
Today my dog was diagnosed with a tumor on her spleen. It is hemorrhaging slowly, and she is on the clock. She needs emergency surgery and, like most American families, our regular medical bills, utility bills, and day-to-day expenses didn't quite make it far enough to have a spare $1,850 dollars laying around.
Lucí is a retired working dog. She was trained to work at Dominion Energy in Surry County, Virginia, but failed out of agility school when she refused to shoot through collapsible chutes. She learned that she could run ON them instead, and get to the suit-guy with less effort.
She is probably smarter than I.
The tumor, apparently, doesn't cause direct pain to her, but it is leaking blood into her abdomen and thoracic cavity making her work harder to breathe, not want to eat, and generally exhibit the kind of lethargy dog owners fear.
As soon as I saw it, I was afraid. As soon as she refused a meal, I called her vet. That was last night. This morning we were at the vet, first there. They no longer have an ultrasound machine at Bayside Animal Hospital, so at 2pm we headed downstate to get an emergency ultrasound.
The ultrasound showed a mass of eleven centimeters on her spleen, so a follow-up chest x-ray was necessary to determine the level of metastasization. The first doctor who analyzed the films gave a very poor prognosis without surgery, but lacked the confidence in his voice when describing his suggested surgical procedure and timeframe for recovery.
So we called Bayside Animal Hospital back, and explained that this new doctor who was able to do the ultrasound and x-rays got us some imaging done, and that we were on our way back.
Doctor Casey at Bayside had a completely different opinion and attitude about Lucí's case, potential for recovery, and overall post-surgical prognosis.
And that's why I am here. There's a good chance that Lucí can live out her full life on this planet as my lightning rod, as my perfect right hand, and I just need a little help to help the pup who's helped keep me together for a decade.
