Please Help Save Bean

Bean was injured in a freak accident that has left her clinging to life.  I would be eternally grateful for anything you can contribute to help provide her with the best medical care possible so that she has the best chance of coming home.

The Bean

Bean has made every day better since she came home in 2012.  She has greeted me at the door every evening.  She has followed me from room to room, always wanting to be close.  She has tried to warn me about the dangers of submerging myself in water whenever I take a bath.  When I return from a trip, she meows at me until I pick her up and carry her around, at which point she starts purring.  She gives expert deep tissue massages, kneading me anywhere she can reach.  She enjoys rubbing her face on people’s shoes.  She loves sleeping on: all electronic devices, any piece of paper I’m trying to read, the trunk near the window, suitcases, her catnip banana, etc.  Her jellybean toes are mostly pink and entirely perfect.  She always lets me trim her nails, clean her eye goo, and rub her tummy.  She is perfect.  And she is everything to me.

There is Hope for Bean

On October 18, 2018, I rushed Bean to the hospital at MSPCA-Angell after she was seriously injured when she was accidently stepped on.

Bean is now facing a multitude of issues.  She has multiple rib fractures on both sides of her chest.  Fluid, likely a result of inflammation, is slowly building up in her chest and needs to be periodically drained.  She has several collapsed lung lobes.  Because she was in so much pain, she could not draw full breaths and the carbon dioxide levels in her body increased to a dangerous level.  The levels of albumin (a protein) in her blood are worrisomely low.  There is concern about her kidney function.  On Sunday, October 20, Bean’s heart stopped beating for approximately 6 minutes.  Through a combination of CPR and life-saving drugs, the amazing medical staff at Angell somehow got her back.  But the necessary CPR also set back her recovery.

But there is still hope.  At this point, Bean is holding stable.  She has been fully sedated and placed on a ventilator to help her breathe and to allow the soft tissue and muscle around her ribs to recover.  Her carbon dioxide levels have decreased.  She is receiving plasma transfusions to help maintain her blood pressure.  She has a group of dedicated doctors assigned to her care and she is being carefully monitored.  She’s receiving the best care possible.

Now she needs time.  With time, there is hope that we can manage all the concurrent issues and that the soft tissue and muscle around her ribs will heal enough that she can still have a good quality of life, full of cuddles and pampering.

Please Help Bean Come Home

Bean is my family.  I’m doing everything I can to give her the best chance possible to come home.  But I need help.  Bean’s vet bills are mounting and will only continue to grow.  Among others, the following things are associated with her care:

-- x-rays, ultrasounds, and CT scans
-- medications to sedate her, manage her pain, and address her other various issues
-- feeding tubes, catheters, and an arterial line
-- various blood and other tests to monitor her functioning
-- plasma transfusions and other medications to help maintain her blood pressure
-- daily ventilation
-- critical care nursing, including physical therapy to move her limbs while she is sedated

For transparency, I have shared the itemized estimates for Bean’s care so far.  To give Bean the time and care she needs, I anticipate that total costs could reach over $20,000.

I know that I am asking for a lot, but Bean is everything to me.  I would be eternally thankful for anything you are able to give.  Any donations will go towards Bean’s vet bills.  They will help me make decisions based only on what is best for Bean, and not based on financial considerations.  If there are any funds left over, I would donate those to the MSPCA-Angell  (a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization) to help support the medical care of other animals in need.

Thank you so much for all the support and for reading Bean’s story.  And thank you for anything you can do to help ensure that her story continues with many more years of snuggles and purrs and lazing in the sun.  It means the world to me.  Please keep her in your thoughts.

Love,
Anna and the Bean
