At 31 years old, Daniel has a rare tumour along the inside of his spinal cord. He lives in Toowoomba with his wife, Rachel and his 7 month old son, Hunter. For Dan, unbearable pain, difficulty walking, pins and needles, and lower body numbness have become a part of his daily life. Sitting upright in a chair is the only way he can get to sleep at night. He should be enjoying time with his beautiful son and family but instead is facing an uncertain future.
In March this year he underwent 6 weeks of radiation therapy in an attempt to reduce the size of the tumour and improve his quality of life. Unfortunately, as to date the therapy has been unsuccessful and the tumour has continued to grow, leaving Dan with increased pain and inflammation despite medications. His pain is so debilitating his specialists have suggested he permanently quit work and go on disability.
Due to the amount of pressure inside his spinal cord, his neurosurgeon has recently made the decision to operate and try and remove a portion of the tumour. Without this surgery, the blood supply to his spine could be cut off and as a result completely paralyse him. He will undergo surgery in Brisbane at the Princess Alexandra Hospital on Friday, November 10, 2017.
There are quite a lot of risks with this surgery with the possibility of paralysis, nerve damage and a higher rate of infection due to his recent radiation therapy, but we are all keeping positive!
We have started a GoFundMe page to raise funds to help cover loss of income, basic living expenses, and travel and accommodation in Brisbane for his family. Our goal is to raise $20,000 as this will help cover an initial 6 month period if the surgery goes to plan. Any donation, big or small, will be received with utter appreciation and will go towards relieving the burden Daniel and his family faces.
Please share this link to help us get the word out, as we want to help Dan as much as we can.
To our brother, we hope this surgery helps ease some of the pain you have been carrying so you get to enjoy a normal life with your family. You will always have an army of support around you. We love you.
