Please help Nabil walk again

Donation protected

My name is Gregory and I'm fundraising for my 12-year old son Nabil.

Nabil has been sick and has not been able to attend school since November 2021. Instead of playing with his friends and pursuing his interests (playing the piano and violin, soccer and attending chess coachings and tournaments) he sits in a wheelchair, unable to move his legs, unable to sit up unaided, and experiences headaches. He needs help with everything from getting dressed to using the restroom.

In December of 2023, Nabil was operated on by a wonderful neurosurgeon for tethered cord syndrome (a disorder of the nervous system caused by tissue that attaches itself to the spinal cord and limits the movement of the spinal cord). The surgery went well but the doctor was clear that success rates vary. She was also clear that he would need intense rehabilitation and physical therapy for at least one year.

Nabil spent two months after the surgery in extreme pain. The pain has since subsided and we are now working daily with therapists to get him stronger and try to get some movement in his legs. He still can't move his legs, but the doctors have not given up hope. So much has improved since surgery already: his sound sensitivity is gone, his voice is completely back, he has more energy and is gradually gaining strength.

Nabil has also been diagnosed with hypermobile EDS (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome). It is a rare genetic disorder which accounts for many of his symptoms. There is still much that is unknown about this disorder.

He is using his spare time to study math and physics at a University level (we are still seeking a tutor for him).

Despite his long and arduous journey so far, Nabil still has a difficult road ahead of him to recovery. We are asking you to consider supporting us with the many costs that long-term rehabilitation entails. Funds will be used for medicine, supplements and therapies, for nutrition and to support one of his parents always being by his side. They will also be used to consult with other physicians as we continue to seek ways for his nerves to heal.

We hope for nothing more than for Nabil to eventually recover and reclaim some independence. We wish for him to have the ability to play with his friends instead of being confined in a wheelchair and dependent on others for the most basic things most of us take for granted. We want him to have the freedom to move his legs, sit up unaided and have a better quality of life!

We implore you to do what you can to help Nabil. We also host a fundraiser in USD on GiveSendGo.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,

Sandra and Gregory Maytan
