Cancer is a word you never want to hear a doctor tell you you have. You also don’t want to hear that someone you love has it.
My best friend of 15 years , Sandy Smith,who has been there for me through many rough times, has been diagnosed with lymphoma cancer.
She has struggled through the sudden loss of her first husband, times of health crisis, and many things that have not been easy. She has a 24 year old son who lives with her, a 14 year old daughter, a 10 year old daughter, her 5 year old non verbal autistic daughter , as well as her 11 year old niece. Her niece lives with her because her family is unable to take care of her.
Sandy is the rock to the kids, she takes care of all the things a mom needs to do, and she also takes her kids to therapies to help them have a better future. On October 7th she is set to start chemotherapy. Chemotherapy copayments are not in her budget , with all of the things the children need. She may need financial assistance to help with taking care of the children in the event that chemotherapy makes it hard to function.
Cancer comes with hidden expenses and stressful challenges . Stress causes cancer , and stress also makes cancer harder to overcome. She has a lot of things in her life that most people would not be able to handle. Gaining custody of her emotionally vulnerable niece , having an autistic child that comes with a large set of challenges, especially since her daughter can’t communicate her needs.
She has an eBay store to sell things and make ends meet. However chemotherapy may affect her ability to earn very needed income. To top things off she has just learned her brother has been diagnosed with lung cancer at the exact same time.
My friend doesn’t deserve this diagnosis, she is caring and kind , and willing to help others however she is able. Kind words, a listening ear, and words of advice and love.
There are many things in every day life that cause stress for all of us. I ask that you put yourself in her shoes and find it in your heart to help. Help alleviate one of her worries of financial distress, so that she can heal faster!! No amount is too small, the numbers add up.
