My name is Barbara and I'm about to have you share a part of life's journey with me. In March 2012 my job relocate to Pennsylvania and I had no choice but to move with it. Leaving my family behind was not easy and living in 2 places took it's toll.
On Thanksgiving Day 2015 I fell ill and lost movements and feelings in my lower extremeties. I was taken to Crouzer hospital in PA where I spent 4 days in the observation room and was in and out running test of all sorts.
The Monday after I was airlifted to University Hospital of Pennsylvania where I underwent a vast number of tests. In the interim, I suffered a huge mishap and had to do therapy for the weeks following. After the dust settled, I was diagnosed with Neuromyelitis optica.
NMO is a very rear immune disease which affected my central nervous system.
On Christmas Eve 2015 I was transferred to Kessler Rehab in West Orange, NJ where I had extensive therapy. It was big excitement one day my family was visiting from NY and I moved my big toe on the right foot.
On 1/29/16 I was transferred to Alaris, Sub Acute in West Orange, NJ where my therapy continued and I started to slowly regain movements and feelings.
It was on 3/1/16 I joined the residents at Brighton Gardens of West Orange, NJ where I was assigned 24hr care and was able to do Outpatient therapy at Kessler for about 5 months.
The months rolled by and before you know it, I was looking at 18 months at Brighton Gardens. I regained more strength and a lot more movements and feelings, so I took a leap of faith and started to prepare for my exit.
It was August 31, 2017 I bid goodbye to my BG family so I could continue my long recovery journey in my own home in New York. I had to reconstruct and include a ramp to accommodate my wheelchair entrance.
There is no place like home and to God be the Glory. God blessed me with the BEST family in the world, my Superstar brother Burke and a wonderful group of friends/extended family who is always at my side, I give thanks!
