Please Help Me Save My Chola's Life

Donation protected
My name is Taylor and I am a 26 year old dog-rescue mom living in Massachusetts. I write this with a giant hole in my heart as I recently found out that my Cane Corso rescue dog, Chola, was diagnosed with  osteosarcoma which is terminal unless treated immediately via amputation surgery and chemotherapy . Otherwise perfectly healthy, my sweet Chola is currently experiencing tremendous pain and discomfort in her shoulder and I need your help to take that pain away as soon as possible and help me save Chola’s life.

Before I rescued Chola, she was found abandoned, wandering the streets of urban Baltimore alone. Chola was so very badly calloused that animal control believed she had been surviving on the streets for quite some time. Only days ago after one of Cholas x-rays, I found out that at some point in time, my dog had been shot. She still has a bullet lodged in her spine! Apparently, I named this dog quite appropriately. But like most stray city dogs, Chola was sent to a high kill shelter immediately. The night she was to be euthanized, Chola was spared by a wonderful foster family in Delaware. From there, after working with CCR, I found myself driving to Delaware in a blizzard to pick up my new fur baby.

Chola quickly became my best friend. She is the most cuddly, affectionate, loyal, silly girl in the world but also made me feel so safe as she is very protective of those she loves. But in the midst of all of our happiness and fun, Chola recently developed a limp in her front right leg. Cholas x-ray revealed a cancerous tumor in her shoulder. gave Chola several days to a month to live. Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) rapidly destroys the bone leaving it full of holes like Swiss cheese. This is extremely painful for the dog and usually results in a life-ending fracture because the bone becomes so spongy and soft. Chola is a perfectly, healthy, strong meaty girl with so much energy and life in her. Despite her vet’s grim prognosis, I decided to get a second opinion from an oncologist. After lots of blood work, and tests, and more x-rays, I received a glimmer of hope. Chola’s lungs, where the cancer usually metastasizes, were crystal clear. And because Cholas cancer has not visibly spread beyond her shoulder, the oncologist believes she is a perfect candidate for amputation. While expensive, dogs in her case respond amazingly well to amputation. These “tripawds” are so relieved to be rid of pain and easily learn how to redistribute their body weight and walk on three legs. But because cancer can spreads through the blood stream, Chola would need to follow up with six chemo treatments which cost about $500 each.  This surgery and treatment, if done promptly, could potentially extend Chola’s life up to three years.

Because I am her forever mom, Chola’s suffering is my suffering. I have fallen deeply in love with her throughout our journey together. She has inspired me to be better in every way. She has brought me the kind of joy and contentment that I truly believed was mythical. I didn’t know I was capable of giving and receiving such fierce, unconditional love. I can safely say, when I lose her, she will be my biggest heartbreak. A part of me will never recover from a loss like her.  But I also know her time to go is not now. When I look into her eyes, she tells me that she is ready to fight.

As a struggling college student and nanny, I do not have the funds to complete her medical intervention on my own. I have already completely drained my bank account and have no money left.  Every single penny I had saved has gone to Chola’s appointments and tests. And this is why I am reaching out to friends, family, strangers, and anyone willing to listen to my story and help me. Chola is a perfectly healthy dog with a lot more life to live. I would hate to deprive her of the opportunity to play in the sand again, eat her giant Christmas bone, or share kisses with her several boyfriend dogs because of finances. I have never needed or wanted anything more than to give my dog the lifesaving surgery and treatment that she so desperately needs now. This sweet girl has been through so much and I am calling on anyone who is listening to please contribute and donate even a tiny bit to our fund. Every little bit counts. And if you can’t contribute, please share my story. In the spirit in the upcoming holiday season, I am pleading for a Thanksgiving miracle. I can’t even begin to express the gratitude I would feel towards anyone willing to contribute to saving Chola’s life. All I can offer at this point is my most sincere and heartfelt thank-you and all the blessings in the world to you and your family. May we all come together and see a miracle through.
