This GoFundMe page has been created for Randy. He is an amazing 57 year old father of two and loving husband. Anyone who knows him would say he is a giving and caring man, always willing to volunteer his time for things such as building school playgrounds, helping friends with home projects, and just always being there whenever needed. But now Randy is the one needing help as conventional medicine failed him in his fight against liver cancer and he has turned to alternative medicine to extend his life.
Diagnosis: On October 16, 2017, Randy suddenly developed right side abdominal pain and within minutes was unable to walk. The emergency room said that he was bleeding internally and they were trying to stabilize him. After several hours, they were able to take him into emergency surgery where they discovered that a major blood vessel in his liver had ruptured due to a large mass. The amazing doctors were able to save his life that day but we eventually learned that the mass was indeed cancer. Liver cancer is rare, but it almost all cases, there is an underlying liver disease such as cirrhosis or hepatitis, but not for Randy. Other than the cancer, the doctors said his liver was healthy. Like most cancers, there is no explanation for why this horrific disease affected him.
Treatment: A liver transplant was immediately taken off the table due to the size of the tumors and a resection was also not an option as there would not be enough healthy liver left. The only option was to embed radioactive beads around the tumor. Randy underwent the procedure with flying colors but within two months developed another bleed, this one smaller and not as life-threatening; however, imaging showed the cancer had developed new tumors and was rapidly growing. Treatment moved to oral chemotherapy but within several months, pulmonary embolisms developed and once again, imaging showed the cancer had continued to aggressively grow. The remaining immunotherapy option would most likely cause a life-threatening event due to Randy’s Crohn’s Disease and all clinical trials were off the table as well again, due to the Crohn’s. There were no options left.
Prognosis: When Randy was taken off the oral chemotherapy, he was told that people with liver cancer typically live 4-6 months without treatment, and his treatment was ineffective. At the time, he was 6 months past diagnosis. That doctor’s appointment was more than 6 months ago!
What happening now: Randy has started an alternative medicine regimen. The treatment is a little more than $1000 a month.
As you can imagine, all of this has not only been emotionally devastating, but, along with the previous medical bills, house payments, etc has taken a huge financial toll. Please consider helping Randy pay his bills and continue his alternative treatment which is giving him and his family the gift of additional time each and every day.
