Please help Gayane fight cancer

Նկարում Գայանեն է՝ իմ քեռի Կարեն Երզնկանյանի կինը և լավագույն ընկերուհիս։ Գայանեն և Կարենը ամուսնացած են արդեն 27 տարի և բնակվում են Երևանում երկու որդիների հետ։

2020 թվականին՝ Արցախյան պատերազմի ժամանակ, Գայանեի ավագ որդին՝ Մհերը, կամավոր մեկնեց և 44 օր կռվեց առաջնագծում, հակառակորդի ուժեղ կրակի տակ։ Երկար ժամանակահատվածներ կային, երբ ծնողները նրանից ոչ մի լուր չունեին և կարող էին միայն հուսալ և աղոթել, որ նա լավ է: Մհերի վերադարձից մի փոքր անց Գայանեի մոտ ախտորոշվել է լեղապարկի քաղցկեղ, որն արդեն տարածվել էր լյարդում։

2021 թվականի հունվարից Գայանեն համառորեն պայքարում է հիվանդության դեմ։ Նա անցել է հետազոտություններ և բիոպսիաներ, քիմիաթերապիայի բազմաթիվ փուլեր և այլ բուժումներ: Ցավոք, անցյալ ապրիլին Covid-ի հետ մենամարտը զգալիորեն փոխեց իրասվիճսակը: Քաղցկեղը ոչ միայն չափերով մեծացավ, այլև դադարեց արձագանքել բուժմանը, ուստի այժմ անհրաժեշտ է փոխել դեղորայքը: Դեղորայքի ամսեկան չափաբաժինը արժե 4500 դոլար։ Հաշվի առնելով, թե որքան լավ էր Գայանեն արձագանքել նախորդ բուժման կուրսին, բժիշկները հույս ունեն, որ նոր դեղամիջոցը նույնպես հաջողությամբ կանցնի: Բայց դրա համար անհրաժեշտ է ծախսերի նոր փուլ, ինչն ընտանիքն այլևս ի վիճակի չէ ապահովել։ Նրանք օգնության կարիք ունեն։

Meet Gayane, my cousin and best friend. Gayane lives in Armenia with her husband of 27 years, Karen, and their two grown sons.

In 2020, during the Artsakh war, Gayane’s older son Mher volunteered and fought on the frontlines, under heavy enemy fire, for 44 days. There were long stretches of time when his parents had no word from him and could only hope and pray that he was okay. Not long after his return, Gayane was diagnosed with urinary bladder cancer which by then had spread into her liver.

Since January 2021 Gayane has been bravely fighting the disease. She has undergone exams and biopsies, numerous rounds of chemotherapy, and other treatments. Unfortunately, these procedures are very expensive in Armenia, and insurance coverage is minimal or non-existent for most of them. The total out-of-pocket cost of treatment to date has far exceeded the family’s annual income, and paying it was only made possible by taking out loans and with some help from relatives. The results, however, were promising and there was every hope of shrinking the mass enough to make a surgery possible.

A bout with Covid last April set those hopes back significantly. Not only the cancer grew in size, but it stopped responding to the treatment, so it is now necessary to switch medications. To put things in perspective, each dose of medication costs $4500, and the average monthly salary in Armenia is around $500.

Considering how well Gayane responded to the previous course of treatment, doctors have every hope of the new medication being successful too. But that requires a new round of spending, which the family is no longer capable of. They need help.
