Anton, an Honor Roll student, is a 5th Grade student at Plato Learning Academy. This year his school started an Arts and Enrich Program that offers band, comic book design, dance, drama, taekwondo, wellness and fitness, and STEM. The classes are offered during and after school. Anton decided to take band and taekwondo as part of his daily schedule.
In band, Anton is learning how to play the trombone. He is excited with playing the trombone even though his trombone is almost as big as he is. In taekwondo, Anton is learning self-defense and character development. Anton has already earned his yellow belt. Because of his hard work and dedication, in his first ever taekwondo tournament, Anton won 2 bronze medals at the Illinois State National Qualifier Championships. As a result, Anton has earned the privilege of representing his school and the State of Illinois at the National Championship in Austin, Texas this coming July.
Plato Learning Academy has many more students like Anton. Unfortunately, because the school has a 99% poverty rate, the overwhelming majority cannot afford to pay for things like band instruments or pay for taekwondo and dance competition fees. Anton’s school pays for all of the supplies and fees for the Arts and Enrichment Program, but the school’s funds are limited.
Currently, Plato has 472 students. Unfortunately, due to lack of funding, only 274 are able to participate in the Arts and Enrichment Program. We would like to extend our programs to all of our students so that all could experience the joy that Anton felt when he won his medals. Like Anton, our students just want the opportunity to excel.
