Friends and family,
As you may or may have not heard through various channels, our sister-in-green, Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Martha Fierro, needs our help. She began to experience worrisome symptoms in late summer and after visiting with her physician, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia or AML in July. It was a heartbreaking reality that had come into her life suddenly and completely unexpectedly. Everyday she faces many challenges including; the loss of her hair due to chemotherapy, extreme nausea, vomiting, and fatigue just to name a few. To make matters worse, she recently learned that her chemotherapy treatment was unsuccessful and she will be desperately needing a bone marrow transplant.
Martha is unable to work, has exhausted her work leave and is, therefore, unable to pay for her mounting medical expenses. As anyone with an ill family member can attest to, the medical bills have accumulated tremendously and can seem insurmountable at times.
Martha is a 15 year veteran of the Border Patrol and has three beautiful children; two daughters, and a son who is only 7. They love and depend on their mother and so it is on their behalf and on the behalf of her “working family” at Clint, we ask for your help in this trying time. All donations will be used to pay for medical expenses not covered by her insurance, to help with daily living expenses and to alleviate any financial stress so she can focus on treatment and healing. A little about Acute Myeloid Leukemia…
What is leukemia?
Cancer can start any place in the body. Leukemia starts in the bone marrow, the soft inner part of certain bones where new blood cells are made. It starts when certain blood cells grow out of control and crowd out normal blood cells. This makes it hard for the body to work the way it should.
Acute myeloid leukemia, or AML for short, is a type of cancer that starts from cells in the bone marrow that are supposed to grow into different types of blood cells. Most often, AML starts in early forms of white blood cells. AML is fast growing. The leukemia cells enter the blood quickly and sometimes can spread to the liver, spleen, central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), and testicles (in men).
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) can cause many different signs and symptoms. Some are more common with certain subtypes of AML. Patients with AML often have several non-specific (general) symptoms. These can include:
Weight loss
Fatigue
Fever
Night sweats
Loss of appetite
Of course, these are not solely symptoms of AML, and more often are caused by something other than leukemia.
