The night I thought it was Rockies last breath....

Karen's Story by Christina Jones

Karen came to work for me two years ago, here at Pioneer Kennel, located 88 acres in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.  I have never met a more conscienscious hard woking person with such a heart for every dog who came to Pioneer.  After one year of working here, I decided that Karen was the person I wanted to have the kennel, so I could retire.

Over the past year,  in her hands, the kennel has flourished.  So many happy dogs and customers!  There have been a few hard luck cases to come here and Karen could not turn them away and took them on at her own expense.

Roxie: A beautiful Great Dane with serious eye entrophion which caused her constant discomfort and scaring around both eyes.  Karen took Roxie in and had consecutive surgeries done to fix both eyes perfectly at her own expense.  Roxi was adopted and now lives with a very loving family and two canine siblings named Shadow and Sarah.  Her life is filled with joy!

Millie a boarder terrior came to Pioneer with serious aggression issues that the owner could not deal with.  Karen agreed to take Millie and in Karen's hands Millie has learned to get along great with other dogs and even much improved with the many people who visit Pioneer.  Millie is Karen's constant companion and has never loved life more!

Now for Rockie.  We call her the "greeter" because she spends most of her time in the kitchen to greet every new arrival at the kennel, and also because that is where the FOOD is!  Rocky is 14 years old with the breathing disorder known as Laryngeal Paralysis (labored breathing).

Rockie was boarded here at the kennel for 5 months while her owner was out of the country.  During that time, we fell in love with Rockie and she fell in love with Karen and Pioneer.  She lived every day as if it were her last and sometimes we wondered if it was.

When Rockies owner returned, she had another dog with her, who was not social with other dogs.   Karen agreed to keep Rockie for the duration of her life.  Also, looking into the surgery that the owner could not afford to do.  She met H. Phelps, DVM at the Veterinary Surgical Center, Winchester, VA who performed the surgery.  She too realized the love Rockie shares.  Total costs of surgery/xrays/ medications was $3442.00.

It is truly a miracle to see Rockie free to roam the property, smelling the smells, swimming, EATING, and greeting the visitors like a normal dog.  No telling how long she will live now that she can breathe.  We love watching her enjoying life.

Thank you so much for helping!

Our goal is $4,000, t cover vet costs and other expenses for her care.

Karen took Roxi to Eye Care for Animals-Leesburg, VA where Michelle Samuel, VMD performed an emergency temporary eyelid eversion II.  Feb 21, 2017 Roxi returned for entropion bleph-hotz/celsus uni-lid bilateral.  Today Roxi is beautiful and suffers no permanent pupil damage.  It was amazing to see her sit in the back yard and just look amazed at the beauty around her!

Roxi came to Pioneer Kennel suffering from entropion.  Coming here at 1 yr and 5 months old it is uncertain how long she suffered.  Irritation was so exreme she could barely function normally.

Rockie is well known and loved as the meeter/greeter at Pioneer Kennel.  Her desire to do her job kept her motivated and through her breathing struggles she still gave it her all with integrity and love!

Our clients love Rockie very much and what a special love she gives in return.
