Free Photography Workshops for the indigenous Mixe community of Tamazulapam del Espiritu Santo, Oaxaca, Mexico.

The Mixes (Mee-hes) are an underserved and isolated indigenous group that inhabits the Sierra Norte mountains of Oaxaca.
The goal of this photography workshop series is to empower Mixe youth with photographic skills to be able to document and preserve their own experiences and history.
The teaching will be a hands-on photography 101. We will start with the basics of using manual settings on digital cameras, understanding lighting, composition and digital image editing. As the workshops proceed, different concepts and kinds of photography will be covered each weekend, from landscapes to portraiture.
The Team:
Conrado Perez Rosas is a photographer and native Mixe. He recently opened the first gallery in the community to support the cultivation of visual arts. Since then, he has organized painting workshops and exhibits with local art teachers and children in the area past. Conrado has also done a significant amount of community service with the town’s municipality, archiving documents and photography to preserve Tamazulapam’s history.
Marko Jokic is a New York-based photographer who used to live in Oaxaca and has been working on a photo project for the past few years involving the Mixe community in Tamazulapam and their migration to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Marko will be donating his time on behalf of Back to the Lab, a photographer community organization based in New York.
Method:
Together, Marko and Conrado have created a curriculum for a series of photography workshops to be offered to young people in the Mixe community.
After the initial launch, Conrado will continue teaching students at the Jamyatstaajk Foto Galeria for the duration of the series.
Ultimately, we want to continue supporting workshops in the Mixe community over a longer period of time so that a legacy of photography can begin to thrive from within.
Our target amount will cover the following:
Free tuition for 6 - 8 students for 2-3 months.
Equipment: 2 DSLR cameras, 1 laptop, 1 external hard drive

Talleres gratis de fotografía para la comunidad indígena de Tamazulápam del Espíritu Santo, Oaxaca, México.
Los Mixes es un grupo indígena, desatendido y aislado, en la Sierra Norte de Oaxaca.
La meta de este taller es capacitar adolescentes Mixes con habilidades fotográficas, alentándolos a documentar y preservar sus propias experiencias e historia.
La enseñanza en los talleres consistirá de fundamentos de fotografía en forma practica. Se enseñarán conceptos básicos para entender el uso manual de cámaras digitales, Iluminación básica, composición y edición digital de fotografías. Mas adelante, se cubrirán varios conceptos y tipos de fotografía, desde paisajes hasta retratos.
El Equipo:
Conrado Pérez Rosas es un fotógrafo nativo de la Sierra Mixe. Recientemente, Conrado ha establecido la primera galería en su comunidad con el objetivo de apoyar la cultivación de artes plásticas. El ha organizado talleres y exhibiciones con maestros y juventud de la región. Conrado ha contribuido con una gran cantidad de servicio en su municipio, archivando documentos y fotografías para preservar la historia de su pueblo, Tamazulápam.
Marko Jokic es un fotógrafo de Nueva York, quien ha vivido en Oaxaca y tiene un par de años trabajando en un proyecto documental sobre la comunidad Mixe y su migración a Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Marko donará su tiempo por parte de Back to the Lab , una organización basada en Nueva York, sirviendo a la comunidad fotográfica .
Método:
Juntos, Marko y Conrado han creado un currículo para una serie de talleres fotográficos que serán ofrecidos, sin costo, a los jóvenes en la comunidad Mixe.
Después del lanzamiento inicial, Conrado continuará enseñando a los alumnos en la galería Jamyatstaajk por la duración de la serie.
A la larga, Conrado y Marko continuarán impartiendo talleres de fotografía con el objetivo de que un legado fotográfico comience a florecer en la comunidad Mixe.
Las donaciones cubrirán lo siguiente:
