Phil & Lenora Gardner

Dear friends –

Some of you may know, while others may not, that on Wednesday May 5th, Lenora Garner, wife of our beloved Caddiemaster, Phil Garner, was rushed to Mountainside Hospital with pains in her lower back and hip.  The hospital staff did numerous tests over the next 24 hours and came up with an initial diagnosis of cancer in her pelvis.  As you can imagine, Phil was devastated.

Over the next two weeks, the doctors at Mountainside ran test after test to isolate the type of cancer and exactly where it was so to figure out the proper treatment.  Each test and each day went by and the doctors were perplexed as they couldn’t isolate the cancer.  With each result, Phil and Lenora weren’t sure whether to be optimistic or more concerned that doctors couldn’t find what they were looking for.  Phil, being the doting husband, slept at the hospital most nights, only coming home to feed and walk his dog, Speed.  Despite our assurances that his coworkers had things covered at the Club, Phil wanted to get back to work.  Sleeping most nights at the hospital and coming to work when he could, Phil never let on to what was going on at home.  Unless you were one of his closest friends, there was never a sign that anything was wrong.  His infectious laugh never wavered.

The good news is three and half weeks after the initial diagnosis and hundreds of tests and two surgeries, doctors have concluded what presented as cancer isn’t actually cancer, but will need to be monitored very closely going forward.  They continue testing to find out exactly what is going on in Lenora’s body, but for now, she is cancer free.  She was transferred to Kessler to transition into going home and was there for a week and a half.  She is now home but has a long road ahead.

Although Phil worked during this period when he could, he missed a fair amount of days and has racked up the doctor’s bills.  I have started a Go Fund Me for Phil and Lenora to help cover some of the days he missed at work and most importantly, to help with the medical bills.  Phil has been a stalwart at Montclair Golf Club and I hope you join me in helping he and Lenora through this tough time.  A small contribution will help them pay these bills so they aren’t saddled with the thought of this hanging over their heads.
