My great-grandma needs help

Bascially my husband and I have hit rock bottom. A ridiculous series of events has led to this and I will tell you the whole thing so you know why we need help.

A year ago, Kentucky experienced the worst snow we had seen in years. My husband lost his job because of the snow. It was a decent job that helped us keep the bills paid and keep food on the table, but not much else.

As a result of that job loss, he was forced to seek out a temp job. And because of where we lived (in the middle of nowhere) I could not get a job because there was nowhere within walking distance. We only had one car.

The temp job did not pay enough to keep the bills paid and the landlord threw us out. We were forced to move in with my grandmother who was determined to help us get a new car so we would be able to find another place to live. She also lives in the middle of nowhere so there was no option for ME to get a job, as much as I wanted to have one.

Then, while we were living with my grandmother, someone broke into her house on Christmas Day, stole ALL of our savings money, scared the crap out of my cats, and left. It was about 260 dollars.

My grandmother was generous enough to not charge us rent, so my husband got his old job back and we started saving up 100 dollars a week until we had 2 grand to spend on getting a new car. We were really excited, and we bought a 2005 Impala.

We thought it was an amazing car because in all the test drives we took it ran beautifully. So we didn't think anything of it when the car company insisted we agree to purchase the car "as is."

That should have been a red flag, but we were so excited about getting a new car we didn't think things through as well as we should have. And, because of that, we were swindled by a used car salesman who sold us a shitty car for 6 grand. We have to pay 300 dollars a month for it.

Within 2 days, the breaks on the car went out and the battery died. We got our old car back (which we had loaned to my mother) so my husband was able to get to work. We paid 171 dollars to replace the battery and fix the breaks on the car.

Then we took the Impala home, thinking everything was fine. Then it started overheating for seemingly no reason. The needle would shoot up, the car would start beeping, and the engine would shut itself off.

So we took it back to the mechanic who told us the dashboard was broken. The car wasn't actually overheating and it just thought it was. So we had to wait a few weeks for him to get the parts to fix it.

The weeks went by and he had one of the parts he needed. Then it snowed.

We got 12 inches of snow dropped on us overnight. My husband tried to get to work, but he couldn't because our old car was burried in snow. He couldn't even get out of the driveway, and even if he could have, the roads were so slick they were not driveable.

His bosses didn't care that it was unsafe for him to try to drive and that the car was stuck under 12 inches of snow. They fired him anyway.

And because of the snow, the mechanic was not able to get the part we needed for the car. So we had to wait for the snow to clear. We waited, and the snow looked like it was going to clear.

Then more snow fell, burrying the part we needed yet again.

So we waited again for the snow to clear, and when it finally did we brought the Impala back to the mechanic. He fixed the dash, and it cost us 178 dollars.

And, once again, we thought everything was fine. But then the car overheated again. And, at the same time, our old car stopped working. It won't run properly anymore either. We can't even put it into reverse, and even when it does run, it wants to stop after a few minutes.

We told the mechanic about the Impala and he found out the cold weather had cracked the car's thermostat. So he fixed that, which cost us another 54 dollars.

Now, after ALL of that, the car STILL doesn't work. It won't even make it 5 miles without overheating. We're gonna take the piece of crap back to the store and tell them to shove it.

Trouble is, we've put over 400 dollars into the car and we don't have enough for our bills, groceries, or stuff for our cats. And we don't know for sure if we will even get our tax return because  the government might yank it for overdue student loans we have not been able to pay.

All we need is $500 if we can get that, it will pay for all of our bills and keep us in grocieries, cat food, and cat litter for the next month.

That will give us the time we need to get our stuff together. That will give us enough time to find him a job because my mother has agreed to let us use her car until

If you can't help, please share.
