Conservation Funding - Pungky Nanda Pratama

Donation protected

My name is Pungky Nanda Pratama from Sumatra, Indonesia. I am an environmental educator and conservationist, teaching in rural schools within human-wildlife conflict areas, as well as working on data acquisition and Biodiversity Protection Plan in South Sumatra. I live on a very unique island, home to very special flora and fauna. We have some of the most impressive areas of rainforest in the world. The rainforest is one of the most important ecosystems on the planet. We are part of that ecosystem and we depend on it. Fresh air, water, food and medicine is provided by the rainforest. Also, the rainforest is vital for combatting global climate issues.

I do a lot of things to protect this island, I work endlessly, with everything I do being for nature. I don't get paid for it, but that's okay. I don't do conservation work for money, nothing is more important to me than the protection of the environment and support and educate those who rely on it. Therefore I am completely reliant on the generous donations from people across the world. I am so grateful to everyone who has supported me in my conservation projects, but my work is far from over, and I need your help more than ever!

Even a small donation will help me survive and carry on working to protect the land I love. I may only be one person, but I truly believe the work I am doing has benefits which reach far across Sumatra, Indonesia, and the world.

Since I have been starting this work 5 years ago, I feel so much things happen and change my life forever. I learn so many thing from villager and from people who always support me and make me more confident to do so many things in Nature Conservation. I need more help to develop more skills on photography because with photograph I can share what I do and what I see in the wild for raise awareness about nature and wildlife. My old laptop is get trouble often and malfunction and my camera almost 6 years with me and several time it get malfunction too. I hope that I could make an upgrade to get the best performance photography with these two important stuff.

This year is a transition for me to work with people who have same passion and same goals to preserve our mother nature and start our education program again after the central government decide to open the school again this year during this pandemic time. Funding is the most important things to make our big three project keep move forward that I have been doing since 2017 till now and I am so glad this year we could make the conservation program move forward and we make new Conservation Project called Sumatra Nature and Wildlife Conservation as an umbrella to manage three conservation work including Environmental Education Program, Flora Rescue Project, and Camera Trap Project.

What I ask for is £7385 which I have budgeted in as much detail as possible. Not a penny will go in my pocket. It will all be used for the conservation work I do. £205 of the budget is the fee taken by GoFundMe, so therefore I am left with £7180.

Cost Breakdown £7180 - For an entire year!
  • £4320 for accommodation, food and transport expenses, including trips to conservation meetings in a year.
  • £900 to buy a Laptop that could help Pungky to do more things and learn new skills.
  • £700 to buy a Camera that could help Pungky take better quality of image for raise awareness and documenting his work.
  • £300 for teaching equipment and materials on Pungky’s Environmental Education Project.
  • £720 to hire local people to help taking care of plant and greenhouse as part time job.
  • £240 for equipment which supports the Pungky's Sumatra Camera Trap Project, with data used to support conservation initiatives and to be used in environmental education classes.

This crowdfunder has voluntarily been set up by my dear friend James Stevens who is a wildlife filmmaker and has been filming the work I do to create a documentary. Indonesian banks are not internationally recognised, so 100% of the donations will be forwarded by James to me.

Conservation Work

In 2017, together with a colleague we started the environmental education program called “The Jungle Library Project”. This project is targeted at schools within human-wildlife conflict and deforestation areas on the border of Isau-isau Nature Reserve. The goal is to raise awareness on the environment and change mindsets of a young generation who have been brought up thinking wildlife destruction is okay. Through an environmental education syllabus, we focus on five main areas including the forests, rivers, endangered & protected animals, Plastic Pollution and Human-Wildlife Conflict with 70% of the program being taught outdoors and 30% in the class.

In the same year, collaborating with the government (Conservation Agency of South Sumatra), I started a new project to preserve native flora called “Flora Rescue Project”. This project focuses on the rescue of flora from destroyed land or unprotected areas across South Sumatra. A process of Rescue, Propagate and Release, focusing on endangered and protected species, as well as raising populations of native flora in the wild. We also provide education, a place to learn more about native flora for community and people who interest with botany.

In 2018, partnered with Anthony Hearn, we started a new conservation project using camera traps called “The Sumatra Camera Trap Project” to record the animal diversity living inside of Isau-Isau Nature Reserve, an area un-researched for over 30 years. Nobody truly knows what lives here, but with evidence of megafauna and biodiversity indicator species, we can build a case to gain stronger protection, ensuring the land is free from destruction. Collaborating with the Conservation Agency of South Sumatra, this project provides further educational material and training for people and gains valuable data on wildlife diversity. This project aims to promote Isau-Isau Nature Reserve as essential and a Biodiversity Hotspot to the world community and also central government to get high level protection status as National Park.

A huge thank you! I feel truly blessed to be supported by the public, local organisations, friends and family, I couldn't do this without you all. Working together we can make positive change to the world. My work is just a microcosm of conservation, but with your donations and support, I can continue my work, continue to grow and continue to protect the environment. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!
