PGCE educational trip to Africa

Donation protected
This years PGCE cohort of students will be visiting Africa in May/June for 2 weeks in order to make a difference in the lives of children within the Gambian community.  My and my fellow colleague Carol's focus will be child sexual abuse and youth offenders, as the need for such action and research has arisen due to continued children’s deaths and crime in the area; as presented in serious case studies within government initiatives and legislational changes.

On average, four children a day in Africa die from abuse totalling to 1,460 individuals a year.  We aim in our time there to put protective measures in place with existing organisations for these children by instigating change and preventing factors that lead to child abuse; whilst learning from the settings about how they manage issues such and this and youth offending.

We aim to visit and educate schools, children, parents and law enforcement organisations about this; and will do this by having placements in these settings for the duration of the two weeks ( with safari elements also included) and providing training courses, lessons and resources. From our research, these settings are extremely lacking in resources so we are also hoping to raise some money in order to fund resources we can take with us and provide them to the settings who require them most.

Time there will consist of visiting the  Youth Front Against Drugs and Alcohol Abuse, The Police Child Welfare Unit and a visit to the Magistrates Court; plus talking and shadowing a village chief to find out how the issues are dealt with at local level and visiting a university where they train social workers and teachers amongst other things.

With the money, we aim to create powerful products for teachers to use in reporting abuse and build upon and develop existing programs for youth offenders; so that the workers can continue to use them once our time has concluded. This will ensure the maintenance of essential resources and develop awareness campaigns within the communities to attack these issues from all sides.

Any donations will be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou
