PET (plastic) Shop Accessible Workshops

Donation protected
The PET shop programme is a series of inclusive online workshops which anyone can complete from home, to make crafts accessible to all.

As a response to the COVID-19 lockdown, we have been working closely with Leeds Disabled People’s Organisation to develop a series of online craft sessions to explore how to re-imagine, rebuild and repurpose material from your recycling bin. A key objective of this is to make these workshops accessible for people with a variety of needs, who might struggle to participate in traditional workshops, as well as those who are staying safe at home during this period.

Immortal Bloom  is a Leeds based collective, creating magical, immersive installations which are sensitive to environmental ethics. We maintain the mantra that ‘Waste is not necessarily wasteful, it just hasn’t been re-imagined yet thus providing an opportunity to explore crafting in an organic and environmentally sound way.’ We are guided by the principles of circularity, sustainability, and biomimicry to produce environmentally and socially conscious work.

The PET shop  name derives simply from the real name for plastic: Polyethylene Teraphatelate or 'Petra'

Each workshop is one hour long and spread over the course of one week;

The PET shop Programme;

1.  Introduction to Immortal Bloom and a brief overview of each artist and their practice.

Brief overview of craft through the processing /manipulation of everyday items recycled from your weekly shop, including all the safety points on how to sterilise to ensure safe practice. A sample of previous plastic creations will also be shown to help visualise the activities we will be doing.

2. Biodegradable Flower Pots (Stef Jo) - creating easy to do and practical objects which can be used to store plants, stationary or herbs.

3. Miniature Eden Project (Rachel Rea) - addressing architectural forms through creative techniques to make miniature greenhouses for assisting seedling growth.

4. PET Puppets (Anzir Boodoo) - cutting and joining, to produce objects which make use of the physical properties of the packaging materials they are made from.

Our workshops incorporate various arts and crafts, elements of Key Stage 2-3 science and are suitable for a wide age range of children and adults.

We have received a small amount of funding from Leeds City Council’s Leeds Inspired programme, however in order to create quality content and free access for everyone to benefit from, we need additional funding.

This is a project we have been independently working hard on for some time and believe it will be an invaluable platform for many people throughout this difficult period and beyond.

The passion and dedication we have for this area has got us this far however in order to really develop and promote our workshops we need your support.

For more information on Immortal Bloom and the work we do please visit our website Immortal Bloom and get in touch via the contact page with any further questions or want to talk more about how you can get involved.
