Peter's Medical & Recovery Fund

Peter Wicker has been touching lives in Atlanta for many years!  You may know him through church activities, his commitment to the Boy Scout community or from spending time in his Little Five Points bike shop or sharing saddle time with him on the roads or at the Velodrome.  To know Pete, is to love him!  It’s now time we show him some BIG LOVE!

In the early hours of Thursday morning, June 1st, Pete was rushed to Gwinnett Medical and it was discovered he had five blockages in his heart. The Friday morning surgery was considered a success and the doctors marveled at the overall great condition of a man his age.  Due to the blockages, his heart has been operating at about 50% capacity for some unknown amount of time. Because of his healthy eating and cycling practices, certain areas of his pumper resembled a 40 year old heart and there were no complications from this 3-hour surgery.

Wednesday, June 7th he returned home.  Saturday morning, the 10th, he woke up to a world where he could not understand or speak the language and was experiencing significant memory loss. Back at Gwinnett Medical in ICU, it was discovered he had suffered a severe Temporal Lobe Stroke in the night.

He spent the next 5 days in the hospital.  During that time, a severe blood clot was discovered on his brain.  The clot could remain the same size or potentially reduce in size after the swelling has gone down. Since the stroke, Pete's language skills and memory are slowly returning.  Another CAT scan is scheduled for Monday, the 19th.

Around the 14th of June, the incision from the heart surgery started separating.  They have repaired this (for now) but this also has to be watched carefully and monitored for infection.

Pete is not out of the woods, so please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

Here is where you can help!

It is unknown how long it will take for Pete to recover and return to work. The family has insurance of course, but the cost of care outside of coverage is already estimated to surpass well over $50,000.

There are many ways you can help the family at this time.  A financial donation of any amount is greatly appreciated. Your thoughts and prayers carry a big part of the load, so please hold Pete close to your heart while his heart heals!  And lastly, if you are in the market for anything “bicycling” at this time, please consider choosing Outback Bikes in Little Five Points – this is a great way to help support the family.

Also, it is helpful for friends to stop by and visit.  This aides in his memory recovery.  If you feel led to visit Pete, please do, either at Gwinnett Medical or in his home once he returns. This could be one of your greatest gifts at this time.

We will be updating you through this campaign and on behalf of Pete, Kate and the kids, they extend tremendous gratitude to the community for all the well wishes, prayers and support you have already provided.
