Helping Underpriviledged Youth

My name is Raphael Matthews, the founder of “Perception2life youth of today and tomorrow”. I graduated in tourism management from Greenwich university in 2012. I have 7 years experience in the charity sector as a fundraiser. I have always been passionate about social issues that affect people and always wanted to change the world in some way or another. Growing up in southeast London, I was confronted with many challenges such as; racism, classification, social disparities and gang violence. Those issues are still relevant today. Last year, there was two stabbings in my area and a close friend of mine was a victim of knife crime.  These events lead me to believe, that more needs to be done as a community and action needs to happen now.

For most of us, we  climbed trees, rode bikes, and played outside. At the time, there was more facilities and support network for our generation, despite the deep rooted existence of crime within ethnic communities and the lack of opportunities as a result of economical and social inequalities in the 90s and early 00s. Nowadays, there seems to be so many relevant tools to be utilised, however the lack of guidance prevents young people to aspire greater. In this day and age youth are forced to grow up faster than their age and that safety net is no longer there. In order to meet the demand of this new generation, this is why it inspired me to create 'Perception2life'

Perception2Life is a community driven organisation that aims to tackle knife and gun culture through education, training, development and free creative programmes for the underprivileged youth. While sharing resources to grass root organisations, homeless shelters and small charities helping children across the UK. During the holidays we aim to recruit school, college, and university students to work with us to gain experience and skills to put on there CVs for future work.We are now at stage to set up and run, art workshops, music lessons, mentoring sessions and parenting classes.

Although we have been registered for one year, we have only fully been in operation since January 2018. In, South Bank, Strand, Covent Garden, Soho, Oxford Circus) Assisting Street Link, The Salvation Army Centre, providing clothes, toiletries and sleeping bags to rough sleepers in Reading, we also worked with Waggy Tails which aid young people with autism at the Emmanuel Centre in Croydon. On November we donated to Brixton soup Kitchen as they do amazing outreach programmes for the homeless. Currently we have sent through a proposal to Trinity Laban Conservitour for building space to start free classical music classes, after biding to get space in November we got 'The Bridge', in Pleasants Park, East Greenwich, where in march we run our first 'Reflective Art Programmes', to tackle social anxiety and depression.

Our vision is to change a young person's mental capabilities, through training and development, by providing education programmes, aimed to tackle anxiety, low self esteem and confidence. We are in the process of reaching out to local councils to assist with funding, creating awareness through means of marketing.

We are only funded by the public and hold fundraising community events and BBQs to gain contributions to donate to chosen organisations and youth programmes. We also have a team of fundraisers that are sent out in different parts of London to do outreach, create awareness and raise funds from the community which are then used to cover our project’s costs such as space rent, art supplies, webite, logo, and app design, sports equipment merchandise and stovk and classroom utensils, clothes and utensils for homeless youth and orphanages etc.

Target funding is £50,000 but £25000 will aid in making our youth projects bigger and better.

Despite all our efforts, there is still so much we can do as a community regardless of your social status and ethnic background, we need your support through donation and sponsorship to ensure a better future for our youth of today and tomorrow.
