After the great success of the pilot project in 2018, the Paxos Contemporary Art Project ,  the Greek island of Paxos will be transformed again into an open air art gallery during summer 2022.

The project aims to support the work of young and emerging artists by offering them a unique environment to express their ideas and creativity.

Furthermore, by promoting the island as a site for contemporary art to regular and new visitors, it is the Paxos Biennale Team’s goal to increase people’s sensitivity towards the environment of the island, preserve the islands heritage and stimulate the local community through art.

Paxos Biennale is planned on the island of Paxos, Greece, from June until September 2022. The contemporary art event will take place in public and nature and it will be completely free for all locals and summer guests.

About the artists

This year 7 committed artists from around the world are involved, all of them extremely motivated to measure themselves with Paxos’ extraordinary, wild nature.

The artists involved are: Julia Krahn   // Matt Calderwood // Talmon Biran Architecture Studio   // Nuria Mora  // Torsten Mühlbach  // Thiago Mazza   // Clemens Behr

The artists will intervene with existing structures of natural and architectural sites across the island, which are predominantly open-air.

About the Festival

The festival sites are located throughout the island. Some will also be visible by the sea. The visitors may access them by car, boat or foot. Public events with the artists will take place during the inauguration week beginning of June (exact dates will follow). A website as well as an information- point in central Paxos will provide visitors with a detailed map of the sites of the festival as well as the surroundings.

About the Founder of the Paxos Biennale

The founder (Italian born Marina Tomacelli Filomarino) of the Paxos Biennale has a long history on the island. Inspired by its diverse sites, she has decided to invite artists to express their creativity in this unique environment. As a result of her love of the island and the Ionian Sea she has also developed the aim to increase healthy tourism to the island long term. From the beginning she was supported by an incredibly passionate and motivated team of locals and summer residents.

About the island

Paxos is found 14 kilometres south of Corfu (1-2 hrs by ferryboat) and 20 kilometres to the east is Parga on the mainland of Greece. The island of endless olive groves covers an area of some 19 square kilometres and is set in the Ionian Sea. Paxos has no airport, can only be reached by ferryboat and therefore, has been able to protect itself from the strain of modern tourism. The eastern coastline of the island is gentle compared to the west coast, which is bold and abrupt, with caves, arches and sheer cliffs. The capital of Paxos is Gaios, on the Northern side is the village of Lakka and on the east side is the village of Loggos. Paxos has a permanent population of approximately 2,300 inhabitants.

Your name will be listed on the Special Thanks page on the official event website.

>250 €: A premium printed photography of one of the 2022 featured art works of your choice (A4 format, no frame) + all of the above.

From the bottom of our hearts, we are super grateful!!!

Where is my money going?

The collected funds will be exclusively used to pay journey, transport and permanence for the artists, materials for the artworks, as well as an artist fee. The accommodations will be kindly offered by a number of friends in Paxos.

A small amount will be used on the organization and the communication (production of posters and flyers...) to promote the biennale.

Until when do we need the funds?

It would be great if we could raise the needed funds by February 2022!

AGAIN: THANK YOU FOR YOUR PRECIOUS SUPPORT!
