Paws 4 Carson - Autism Service Dog

Donation protected
Paws 4 Carson is seeking help in fundraising for a Service Dog specially trained to help a special little boy with Autism. Carson is a 6-year-old boy from Temecula, CA who needs the help of a special furry friend to help him navigate the complexities of Autism. Carson's parents have connected with a great company who will be training Carson's new pal to help him with communication, mobility without the need of adaptive strollers, and to help Carson learn that running away from home is very dangerous.

CARSON'S STORY - Learn about Carson

If you know Carson today, you may not know that his journey into this world was a bit challenging from the start. Carson was born polydactyl, meaning he had some extra digits on his hands and feet. In Carson's case, he had one extra finger or toe on each hand or foot, some more 'normal' in look and placement than others, but some that would surely cause some trouble down the road. Just after Carson's 1st Birthday, he underwent extensive surgery to remove and correct his hands and feet. This left Carson in nearly a full body of casts for 8 weeks as his little hands and feet healed. The Doctors at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego did an amazing job.

Shortly after learning again how to walk and use his hands again, Carson started his journey with Regional Center, learning at this point that he was high risk for Autism. The Inland Regional Center worked with Carson with in home, early intervention, services for over a year. We met some amazing men and women through this time, and once Carson turned three, he was formally diagnosed with Autism just before transitioning into a special education pre-school program.

Fast forward a couple years, Carson is entering 1st Grade after completing preschool, transitional kindergarten, and then kindergarten. He's an amazing student despite his lack of purposeful speech. He reads at nearly a typical appropriate level, he's physically active, loves all kinds of foods (especially popcorn) and steals the hearts of all the other kids and teachers at school.

Kids with Autism are all so very different. They call it a spectrum for a reason. Carson is starting to explore behaviors that one might associate with a 2 or 3-year-old. Think 'terrible twos' but in an almost 7-year-old body. Eloping (running) from adults without concern for his own safety is one such behavior, and the main reason we started considering a service dog. We've learned so much more that a service dog can help with over the last month of research, the most exciting being the chance that Carson may find his own voice faster when paired with another non-verbal furry friend.

We appreciate your support and thank everyone that has given to this cause already. We know that cost seems high, but the hundreds and hundreds of hours put into the specific obedience and Autism training really adds up. Our goal as we go through this process is to identify opportunities for future families in need, so that we can help others through this journey. We aren’t the first family seeking help to acquire a service dog, and we know that we won’t be the last.

BUSINESS SPONSORSHIP - Learn how you can help

If your business would like to become a highly visible sponsor, we would love to talk. Aside from being fully featured throughout the upcoming site www.Paws4Carson.com, sponsors at certain donation levels will receive an opportunity to be featured on the Service Dog’s working vest. All sponsors will also receive video, photo, and written updates for their own business and marketing use. If you'd like to help or you would like more information, please feel free to reach out to Carson's family directly at [phone redacted].

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
