This site was created as a memorial scholarship fund in Patty's honor. Her wishes were to start a program to help local bartenders break the cycle and attend a local college while still working.
Although restaurant jobs are lucrative and have many positive aspects, its a job that is tough to make your lifelong career as my mother did. Long, odd hours, stressful environments, varying wages, and the lack of benefits make this job choice difficult to sustain healthfully for any long-term amount of time.
Patty often struggled with the decision of whether or not to go to the doctor for lack of insurance or ability to pay. At the beginning of 2014, this very struggle finally led her to the doctor which landed her a stage IV terminal cancer diagnosis that stole her beautiful life in 7 short months. She never forgave herself for not going to the doctor sooner and wished their was a way she could encourage others to find jobs with benefits or make personal insurance a priority in one's budget.
Back in 2010, her daughter found a way to go back to college while still bartending. Although it was a struggle to pay for school without loans, she was able to do this with the support of those who loved her. This lead her to a career in teaching and eventually leaving the restaurant business entirely.
It was Patty's goal to help other bartenders who aspire for careers outside of the restaurant business. This scholarship fund will hopefully do just that.
We are in the infancy of this program. Very soon we will open a website and begin taking applications for the fall of 2015.
