Patellar Tendon Bearing Brace for Logan

Donation protected

We need to raise $7,500 in order to purchase a specialized brace and custom shoes for a community member severely impacted by arthritis, medical trauma, and lifelong disability.

We (Logan’s family and loved ones) have already raised more than $500 offline; to avoid fundraising fees, Canadians can e-transfer directly to loganftrudeau AT gmail.com (replace AT with @) and anyone can also send via  . Those donations will be manually added to this campaign for transparency.

Logan is a pillar of the Vancouver queer community and needs our help. If you’ve been to a film or music festival in the city, chances are good you’ve benefited from their work. Maybe you’ve volunteered with them, or seen their face on a poster at a community centre as part of the Trans-Inclusive campaign with the Vancouver Parks Board.

We are raising money for medical expenses that will drastically improve Logan’s quality of life. Nearly 20 years ago, they first began dealing with the effects of early childhood trauma and medical issues that continue to impact them to this day. Lifelong alignment issues caused the deterioration of their joints from hips to feet, and by 2009, they underwent surgery to fuse the joint in their right heel.

Unfortunately, this surgery wasn’t enough to combat the steadily increasing arthritis, joint instability, and pain in their foot. This would continue over the next decade, before they finally discovered the source of the problem which was a misalignment of their hips at birth. At this point, Logan has end stage, bone-on-bone osteoarthritis in their right ankle.

In addition to multiple fractured bones in their right foot, their left ankle is now showing moderate degeneration due to arthritis and compensating for the right foot’s inability to take its share of the load for many years.

If you know Logan, you know they are a delightful giant bear of a human. The prolonged inability to use their right foot has had a detrimental impact on their life, drastically restricting their ability to work, to volunteer at the events so beloved to them, and to be in community. Being unable to walk for more than a few minutes at a time and in near constant pain, they have been missing from our community spaces for far too long.

At this point, we have run out of surgical options. Physiotherapy and exercise to strengthen and stabilize their joints is becoming intolerable. The doctors have prescribed a much more sturdy brace option than Logan has had in the past: a patellar tendon bearing brace. This will actually take some load off of their right foot, lessening their pain and increasing their ability to walk.

This device is expensive, and insurance will only cover ⅓ of the cost, if any at all. We are looking to the community to help make this life-saving device a reality for Logan.

The total cost we are raising is $7,500 to cover the cost of the brace and specialised shoes for Logan. We have already raised more than $500!

Now with the restrictions on gathering, our disabled community members are even more isolated than ever. It can be so hard to be in constant, debilitating pain, in addition to being further isolated from community.
