Its been 16 years this August since I set off from Australia on my epic musical journey to the UK and Europe.
I’ve lived in 5 cities in my life - Perth, Sydney, Liverpool UK, Manchester and currently, London.
I have always had working bands in each city - Lunacy, Wizard, ThemBones, 9 piece Palumbo and the Funk and now 4 piece Palumbo.
I came to London in 2010 to study production and arranging @ LCCM London Bridge where I had the facility to arrange, produce and co-produce, ROCK THE FUNK (2012) and ALL THE RAGE WE ARE (2014) both albums featuring 9 instruments including a 3piece horn section. Many of the tunes continue to receive airplay globally, including BBC with “Try it Out” from ROCK THE FUNK
Its been a steep learning curve as well as the fact that I have now found my niche day job, performing popular songs in Dementia Homes, Mental Health and Learning Disability Centres.
This also comes from my prior study as a counsellor. I’m immensely interested in supporting those with mental health issues but my passion comes from my music and being able to find a way to combine those two elements has been a great incentive for me.
As a songwriter and performer it is artistic passion that drives us to sacrifice “comfortable” financial living, to “brave” it on the original circuit, regularly performing the music we write.
There is mostly no money in it, but the fact that people come for the experience, smile, dance, get something out of it is the inspiration.
The therapeutic nature of the arts, inspiration in that live or recorded moment has such far reaching effects which are only now beginning to be researched but which musicians have known from time immemorial.
However, as with any business or artistic project, it needs a budget to occur.
Even the classical greats Mozart and Beethoven etc needed sponsorship to write our musical history.
Musician expenses and fees, recording, mastering, pressing cds and vinyl, promoting the music to put it out there, radio plugging, videos, promoting shows and showcase events, touring…
These are the elements I am asking for your help to fund !
These days with the internet explosion, computer games and superhighway of information we experience in this modern era, finding a music label with a budget to sponsor a musical project is very difficult.
There are not as many labels willing to risk as there was in the bygone era, even 30 years ago, hence, we as artists need, and conversely, do have the technology to reach out to our friends, fans and family for a budget.
And it’s is my first time trying this way !!
I last recorded in 2016, 2 singles “This Thing” and “She Said” in Berwick St Studios, Soho where David Bowie,The Specials and Bjork etc once recorded.
I am now due to record my new album with producer/engineer Simon Willey, who works for Brian Ferry (Roxy Music), and has credits with The Pogues, The Great Gatsby (film) and Prince.
I am really looking forward to working with Simon in August/September and beyond this year.
The album will be a journey from high intensity to more laid back and spacious. Reciting stories of life and love
I have always tried to push boundaries musically and with this album I aim to create more space within the songs.
