Story

We are focussing initially our fundraising efforts to relocate and rebuild houses for families who lost their homes in the Kawatuna district of Palu. Most families homes have been levelled or rendered uninhabitable forcing the occupants to live under plastic tarpaulins nearby.  Disaster relief shelter have not yet be seen in this area and many others due to either availability, accessibility or organisation. Sanitation currently is basic (toilet in housing ruins, the nearby creek or rumput-rumput [bush] Other hygiene needs are the same. Daily heavy monsoonal rain exacerbates the peoples difficulties and health risks. People also live in an elevated state of anxiety as a result from their recent past experience,  current situations and through the continual threat of more major earthquake incidences with the daily occurrence of earth tremors.
The families we are targeting are unable to afford to rebuild, let alone leave this area for respite as their financial means are small. A government pension for an office worker for example is approximately $70 AUD per week, half of a weeks salary.

Relocation away from this area is advisable as the region is considered extremely vulnerable to Liquefaction, a phenomenon in which, during a large earthquake event, vertical and horizontal displacement of solid ground causes the earth to assume a consistency such that it behaves like liquid. The Palu district of Balaroa was a tragic example of Liquefaction.

We are currently researching with the aid of local connections the purchase of small prefabricated traditional timber dwellings. Within the price the houses are transported to Palu and re-built. We observed timber houses in Palu and surrounds almost invariable remained standing (non mudslide/liquefaction/tsunami regions), while concrete brick buildings either collapsed or were left uninhabitable.

House unit value is not yet known but is estimated to be around $5000 AUD. Land location and value at this stage is yet un-researched. Other possibilities will of course be considered based on many factors but most importantly the peoples will.

We as campaign organises have significant collective experience. Olive (currently in Palu) was raised in this town and region of Sulawesi. Her family, extended family and friends reside in Palu. She is well connected with many people in government and non-government organisations. Additionally and most importantly she has a beautiful rapport with all of her people, regardless of social status. She is a strong, proud and motivated ambassador for her people. I have been visiting Indonesia for over 20 years on over 40 different occasions. 5 times to Palu and Sulawesi. A life time of experience in many different work and travel environments affords me skill and perspective into new situations.

Afterword:

We arrived in Palu 5 days after the earthquakes and tsunami. Very quickly it became apparent the multitude of needs of the affected people had manifested beyond what aid was available.  We are quite certain, as is healthily extant now,  little of the little money promised for home rebuilding will reach the people who who most need it.

We ask that you make a donation, even small to assist us to help rebuild these peoples lives in this way.

Problems donating?

Try from a different device. If you're on a mobile device, use a computer instead (or vice versa).
Try with a different browser. Google Chrome and Firefox are generally the most reliable.
Try a different internet connection. If you're using mobile data, switching to wifi or another connection can help.
Try a different card. For instance, if your card's CVV code (security code on card back) is '000,' it won't go through.
Double check that you're entering all of your card information correctly, including the spelling of your name, the billing zip code, the card number, the security code, and the expiration date.
Contact your card provider to make sure they are allowing payments to the GoFundMe campaign you're donating to.
