My friend’s daughter was wounded in this tragic shooting last December. Amidst the headlines, connections touch us; the violence on our streets, in our country happens to real people.

While the court crawls towards what accountability is possible, one appearance after another, her physical wounds have thankfully healed. The road ahead is long and filled with choices.

The family’s focus now is on moving forward, and they are reaching out to us for hope and support. We can all be a part of this story; we can help pave roads out of the violence which increasingly surrounds us.

The daughter is putting her life back on track, obtaining her high school diploma and attending Durham tech community college. She is showing us her incredible strength. Not only is she committed to making life work for her, but she is also uplifting her community. She plans on opening a support group to help other young people going through what she survived.
