Three years ago, I took a class with Chiaki O'Brien at the Textile Center. Which started my journey with Saori weaving. The process of Saori weaving is a colorful, expressive, and intiuitive. If you know me, you know those words also describe me, and all I live to use while making my art. I have fallen in love with the meditative joy of this style of weaving while making wall pieces and my own unique textile necklaces. I am wondering how I can make installations and clothing from Saori weaving. I have an opportunity to travel to Japan to learn their new technique of warping the Saori loom. Which will help me make my work. I need your help to afford the trip.

I am a long time artist but a new weaver and I am exploring on how to make weaving in my own voice. I tried to recieve a grant to go to Japan to learn more about Saori which I did not recieve.
I reached out to my teacher, Chiaki, and she told me SHE was taking a group of women to Japan in October 2017. Going with Chiaki will keep costs low for me and give me connections to artisans in Japan. We will travel around Kyoto and Osaka , learn local dying techniques, visit Saori weaving shop and school, and be inspired by Japan.I will stay on after my time with Chiaki and visit the Kyushu Island to visit potter Miki Oka for three days. To learn more about Japanese contemporary art. I reached out to Saori no Mori and they have reserved a spot for me at their school for three days.
I need your help to pay for my housing and food while I travel with Chiaki for two weeks (housing $688, food $800), three day stay at the Saori school. ($100 for housing, training $360), my Japan Rail pass ($500), extra travel costs on subway ($100), museum fees ($100), and money to buy textile research items (aka a few souvenirs) to inspire my weavings when I get home ($100-200). I have used my life savings of frequent flier miles to buy my ticket to Japan.
My boss let me take off three weeks so I could jump on this opportunity of a lifetime. (Wet Paint is a great place to work! Thanks Darin!) There was a one spot left in Chiaki's tour and I snatched it up!
My reach goal would be an additional $1500 to be able to buy a Saori loom. So I could keep up my Saori weaving art/craft.
