Owie has a BIG Owwwwie

Owen (Owie) Collins is 5 years old and has already endured SIX surgeries to correct congenital deformities related to Spina Bifida. (Below is a summary of Owen’s medical conditions.) On Tuesday, January 2, Owen had surgery to create a second ureter and an opening through his belly button to allow him to catheterize himself to fully empty his bladder. Recovery from this surgery has been very PAINFUL and very SCARY for Owen and his parents.

When Owen is in the hospital, his mommy and daddy cannot work. Mommy (self-employed, owner of Sew Handmade) is at the hospital ensuring Owen gets the care and attention he needs and Daddy (a paramedic) is busy taking care of Owen’s three brothers. (Daddy has FMLA, so his job is protected, but he does not receive pay for this leave. )

Owen’s Medical Conditions

Owen officially has myelomeningocele of the L1-L5, Intense mass of the T1, Diastematomyelia (bifurcated spinal cord-his cord is split in half saggitally at L2),
Syringohydromyelia
(cysts build up inside his spinal cord at L1),
Tethered cord and lipoma at L4,
Neurogenic bowel and bladder,
Diaphragmatic hernia repair,
Spinal curvature at top and hip,
Sprengels deformity,
Low muscle tone and weakness (fatigues easy),
Wears AFOS braces,
Missing kidney and testicle,
Mitrofonoff (permanent stoma in belly button to Cath 5 times a day)
