Growing up, I was always told "you are going to be a great NBA player" due to my height. People only saw me in an athletic light and not an academic light. In rural Arkansas, I was always surrounded by friends and family who played sports and planned on making it to the big leagues as a way to someday give back to our town. I applauded them and wished great luck and fortune on their endeavors. On the other hand, I wanted to prove that just because I am 6'5, I did not have to resort to sports to make a living for myself.
I spent time trying to find what I wanted to do when I graduated. I was sitting in Precalculus when my teacher, Mr. Whitfield (a Harvard College graduate), told us that if we are doing what we love, we will never work a day in our life. If this was the case, then I would never work a day in my life having a career in Mathematics. Being able to manipulate numbers and solve problems is refreshing and keeps me on my feet. My passion for math has allowed me to earn a the highest score on the AP Calculus AB exam and gain college 8 college credits. Because of this and other AP tests, I am on track to graduating college a semester early.
I graduated as the Salutatorian of the KIPP Delta Collegiate High School's Class of 2016 and matriculated to Xavier University of Louisiana where I am a Mathematics Major with a minor in Computer Science. At Xavier, I am on the Dean's List with a 3.5 GPA, a member of the Gospel Choir, Math Club, Tutor, and Supplemental Instructor for Calculus. I also plan to be a manager for one of the sports team as well as run for a position in student government. My long term goal is to get a PhD in Applied Mathematics and work NASA or the NSA conducting research.
In order for me to acheive this goal, I have to finish the rest of my undergraduate career. With this being said, I have found myself short of funds to continue to fund my educational career. I was awarded a $500 scholarship from the Mathemtics Department for my academic performance and participation. After repairing cell phones and computers as well as working fast food to gain $1000 to add with my scholarship to help pay my balance of $3000 which is due August 2, 2017.
With your help, I can reach my goal of $1500 and be able to continue school in mid August. Thank you so much for taking the time to read, donate, and share. May God bless you!
