Outpatient ED Treatment for Rawiyah Tariq

Donation protected
Rawiyah Tariq  has been struggling with anorexia nervosa* for over a year. They have been hospitalized twice so far this year in part because of the complications of their eating disorder. You can hear their story on the new My Black Body Podcast available on various platforms.

Like most low income, queer, fat, Black, gender non-binary people, Rawiyah has been trying to piece together support through friends and providers through community mental health. Additionally, many physical and mental health providers are not trained in the specific clinical needs for people recovering from an eating disorder who have complex medical needs. What often happens is that well-meaning, untrained providers have a deeply negative impact on a person's ability to recover.

Sadly, Rawiyah is not receiving the crucial Black, fat, queer-centered eating disorder treatment that they so desperately need to be able to thrive in their healing journey.

To read more about how eating disorder treatment fails and further others people with non-dominant systemic identities, please read this article, Why Eating Disorder Treatment is Failing Us All  that I wrote in 2018. While a higher level of care is unsafe for Black, fat, queer, gender non-binary people, Rawiyah still needs to access outpatient providers to support them in healing.

Donating to this GoFundMe for Rawiyah will mean that they can access the care needed to support and grow in their recovery. The current amount is an estimate of how much will be needed to pay for a medical doctor, therapist, dietitian, and recovery coach to support them for 6 months.

While Rawiyah is a strong advocate for mutual aid through community, they are currently in need of our communities' support.

Please like, comment, share, and donate as much as you can so that we can be sure that Rawiyah's healing needs are met.

Thank you for showing you care!

* is used to denote that writing anorexia nervosa (AN) is intentional. The DSM-V further stigmatizes fat people experiencing AN by labeling them differently with "atypical AN" when anorexia should only refer to eating behavior and not BMI.
