How did you arrive at your identity?
What cultural factors combine to make you who you are?
Enter Jess:
She's an African American and Puerto Rican, 22 year old woman from Queens, NYC. She's a native English speaker. She is a first generation college student who beat the odds by graduating from Syracuse University in May 2014.
Enter Marie:
She's a Haitian American, 22 year old woman also living in NYC. She's fluent in French, English, and Creole. She learned English after emigrating from Haiti as a teen, and will now be graduating from Plattsburgh State University in May 2015.
Neither of us could afford college. Neither of us had much support.
But we can now proudly add "college graduate" to our socioeconomic identities. But what about our cultural identity? As two black women living in America, we wonder how much our nationality affects the root of our black experience.
Two women, one question: How is the black identity expressed within European culture?
As a Haitian immigrant, Marie did not become aware of the construct of race or colorism until she arrived in the U.S.
Jessica, a woman of two cultural backgrounds, often finds herself deconstructing and redefining what it means to be black.
We all identify who we are, what we do, and how we fit within life's scheme, through a layered cultural lens. Our identities are often a reflection of that culture. After spending our entire lives as black women in America, we'd like to observe what the black experience is like in Europe.
Armed with our camera, laptops, and recording devices, we will journey through Europe to find our answers. We will publish our findings on our travel blog, complete with photos and videos of our experiences.
We will be in Europe from May 2015 until August 2015.
First stop: London. Next? Paris. After that? Greece, Barcelona, and Amsterdam.
We'll be using our respective academic foundations to ground our findings in thoughtful sociological analysis.
