My dear friends have been in a long arduous adoption process of a child with special needs.  She has Type 1 Diabetes, and was diagnosed when she was 3 ½ years old.  She has been in their sole custody for the past 3 years and have loved her, cared for her, and been attentive to her emotional and medical needs.  She is now a thriving 7 year old girl who has been attending her local school for the third year.  Her guardians have made sure that she has 24 hour care, including an excellent paraprofessional and well trained nurses at her school.   Despite her disability, she participates in theater, gymnastics and piano classes.  She has many friends and is loved by all who know her.  Her paternal guardian even retired early from his job in order to care for her.

This little girl was entrusted to my friends by her biological mother who was unable to care for her.  The biological father had not been in her life since she was 9 months old.  They followed all of the rules of a private adoption, however the biological father, despite not attempting to contact her for years, is contesting the adoption.   

For those who are unaware, Type 1 Diabetes is a very serious disease which needs to be managed 24 hours a day.  Having blood sugar levels too low or too high are life threatening.  She wears an insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor which is connected to her guardians and alerts them of any unsafe blood sugar levels.  They awaken approximately 3 times a week to correct her low or high blood sugar levels.

As you can imagine, such a long court process has been a major financial burden on them.  They love this little girl more than words can express, and she loves them and wants to be with them permanently.  She has fears and anxiety that she will be taken from them.  Everyone who knows them sees how beautiful a family they are.
