Bernie's Story: For something that seemed as minor as a sinus problem, quickly escalated to the devastating diagnosis of a rare cancer! This then resulted in two major surgeries over three days, with the first surgery taking 17 hours to complete & the next approximately 11 hours. The outcome being, the loss of Bernie's right eye & surrounding orbital cavity & multiple skin grafts. Starting next week, Bernie will undergo an intensive 6 week course of radiation. She will also have many months ahead of her with physiotherapy & speech pathology.
A Bit About Bernie: As a proud mother, loving partner & devoted nurse of 27 years, Bernie has always given so much of herself to others, both professionally & personally. We, as her friends & colleagues, feel it is our honour & duty to be able to repay Bernie for the selfless support she has always shown those around her.
When we asked her friends & colleagues to describe Bernie, it was obvious common ground that the same sentiments seemed to be repeated to describe our beautiful friend as; vibrant, vivacious, generous, kind hearted, bubbly, upbeat, hard working, fun, always happy to help & support others. These were just some of the lovely words used to describe a woman who has an amazing passion for life & has a beautiful ora, which beams out to all those fortunate enough to cross paths with her.
This is our reasoning for setting up a fundraising page. We feel it's time to watch 'The Good Karma' come back to a woman who has given so much of herself to s many people.
Bernie has shown true courage & strength during this time, she has never complained about her situation & has been a real inspiration to anyone who has crossed her path during this journey including doctors & nurses during her stay in hospital & many outpatient appointments. She has proved her strength of character & is adjusting well to her new look, the loss of her eye & having to live with an eyepatch. She has been truely amazing through this whole process!
What your money will do: After Bernie has fully recovered from her surgeries, skin grafts & radiotherapy we are hoping to be able to raise enough through this fundraiser for her to be able to get a custom made 'orbital prosthesis' through a wonderful company we've found in Broken Head, northern NSW. As you can imagine, these types of prostheses don't come cheaply, nor do they have a lifelong lifespan, which means she will need more than one over the coming years. Having this prosthetic fitted, will help restore Bernie's self confidence & help her rebuild her life. If enough money is raised, hopefully we can send her to Broken Head for a four day R&R while she has this prosthetic fitted in the months following her treatments.
How you can help: any donation, no matter how large or small, will not only go to helping finance the prosthetic but can also help with the ongoing expenses of medical bills & day to day life, while Bernie is unable to work.
Bernie is certainly not one to ask for help, so we are asking on her behalf to help in any way you can to help her on this tough journey ahead of her.
