Lluest is the only equine charity in this part of Wales and is in desperate need of immediate running costs to help us through the next few months. We have 162 horses and ponies in our ownership with 22 currently on site and we desperately need support to see us through the winter months.
This is an emergency situation. Our funds are at a critical level.

The number of horses needing our help has been steadily rising and costs have also risen massively over the past months. The price of hay has doubled this year due to recent adverse weather conditions. We must raise £16,500 in the next couple of months. We have had to temporarily close our doors to new rescues until our finances have recovered.

We have been a registered charity for 33 years and have rescued nearly 400 horses, ponies and donkeys in this time. The Trust’s staff also monitor the mountains and commons of this part of Wales where horses and ponies are often found struggling to survive through the winter or even through the excessively hot and dry summer we’ve just experienced.

We are a much-needed presence at local horse sales where horses and ponies from all walks of life are gathered and sold. These places can be very loud and chaotic. Horses are frequently penned without bedding and water for long periods to be then pushed, sometimes roughly, through sale ring. For a feral pony, fresh from the mountain, this is a terrifying experience. We are currently campaigning to improve conditions for these animals, particularly the young and unhandled for whom it can be very traumatic. Young foals are regularly forcibly weaned from their mothers on the day of the sale.

Lluest is an advocate of Equine Assisted Learning, running Therapy workshops that bring horses and people together and holding activities with horses to promote human physical and mental wellbeing. We are building upon our already successful pilot courses, but time is running out for the Trust.

Our volunteers include young adults with mental health issues and special needs who regularly come and help on the yard. We have seen them grow in confidence over time. Lluest, which means ‘haven’ in the Welsh language, is a place where people and horses can feel safe and are valued.

Your donations will go towards helping ponies like Linus (pictured below) rescued from scavenging on wasteland, after being dumped and now working as a proud Therapy Pony to support vulnerable adults and young people to develop confidence and life skills at Lluest.

With your help we can continue to make a difference and transform lives.
