Our Pal, Arnett Howard

Arnett Howard is an American jazz musician, journalist, teacher, historian, and unofficial ambassador for Columbus, Ohio. He co-wrote the books Columbus: The Musical Crossroads, Listen for the Jazz: Key Notes in Columbus History, and Ohio Jazz: A History of Jazz in the Buckeye State. 
 
Arnett has been a staple in the Columbus music scene for over 50 years. Having played 250 to 300 concerts a year, for 18 years with his ‘Creole Funk’ band, then playing with ‘Arnett and Friends until 2018; he’s been a pillar for the schools, civic organizations, hospitals, veterans affairs, and political and musical events around the Columbus metropolitan area.  His image is instilled, along with fellow Columbus artists, in a mural located on Long Street, which honors their lifelong contributions to Columbus culture.
 
Beyond being an inspiration to the city of Columbus, Arnett’s kindness towards family, friends, and strangers is one of his qualities that will always be treasured. He is the epitome of brotherly love, cherishes his nieces and nephews, and has blessed us all with many bright moments throughout his life.
 
On October 16th, 2020 Arnett suffered a health emergency and is in intensive care at Grant Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.  In an effort to defray some of his mounting and on-going medical expenses, we have set up a Go Fund Me page in Arnett’s name. 
 
His artistry has influenced generations of musicians and music lovers for half a century.  His compassion knows no limits. Now, Arnett needs our help in getting through his difficult time. We encourage everyone to contribute  what they can and support Arnett in his time of financial and spiritual need. We welcome all donations, prayers, and words of encouragement to pass on to Arnett.
