Alicia and I dreamed of having a baby, and after trying for several years, we learned last fall that we would become parents! We’ve spent the last several months making all of the arrangements, including figuring out how to cover Alicia’s unpaid maternity leave from work.
During her 28th week of pregnancy, Alicia started going into premature labor and was admitted to the hospital. They transferred her to a Rainbow Hospital to keep her on bed rest and hopefully prolong the labor so that she could reach 34 weeks. However, our little baby girl entered the world after only 30 weeks!
Alicia is doing well, but Hannah will need to spend time in NICU until her weight is up and the doctor is sure that she's healthy enough to safely come home. Once the bills start rolling in, we will be faced with serious financial hardship. Thankfully, my medical insurance covers the hospital stay, but they don't cover the extra equipment and services needed for preemies. There are deductibles, co-pays, and travel costs back and forth to the hospital as well as the extra lost income from Alicia being out of work longer than expected. (Her company is small, and there is no short-term disability, paid maternity leave, or vacation time available to her.")
We're usually the ones able to give to others who need help, so this is very hard for us right now. We are asking for whatever you can spare to help us get through this. We'd like to be able to concentrate our thoughts and energies on our beautiful daughter who needs us instead of worrying about how we're going to pay all the bills.
