Orthodox Church & Cemetery (Anaka's) - Stenen, SK

Donation protected
Update June 7, 2023. This little country church north of Stenen is still going strong. We continue to have services there. After service yesterday, Father blessed the graves. Unfortunately, some of the buildings had been destroyed, the cemetery needs regular upkeep and the church building requires some TLC. Any donations to keep the church and cemetery going would be very much appreciated.

In May, 2019, fire destroyed buildings at St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church & Cemetery, 2 miles North of Stenen, SK, also known as Anaka’s Church and officially known as Holy Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The kitchen, bell tower, garage with lawn equipment and the outhouse were burned to the ground. The church itself was not harmed by the fire but is in need of work as does the cemetery. Due to costs related to the fire, funding to do these necessary repairs is limited.

We are desperately asking for donations to repair and update the church building. We are especially reaching out for donations to anyone who has loved ones buried in the cemetery to help keep the cemetery well groomed and in good repair.

"When the Ukrainian pioneers arrived at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, they would gather together to worship in their orthodox faith. At first it was in houses and then the priority was to build a church and a cemetery. The first gatherings were recorded in 1902 and in 1905 construction of the current church building began. For many years, this location was the focal point for the pioneers to maintain their Ukrainian culture. This church has held continuous services for nearly 120 years and we would love to see this continue, to honor those ancestors who came before us and labored long and hard.

May their memory be eternal. Вічная Пам'ять "
