These are children who's parents are unable to care for then due to social issues like drug / alcohol abuse, parents in prison (sometimes both both parents), prostitution, or there are so many children in the family they are unable to feed them all so they are placed on the home Monday to Friday and we have been known to send the children home with food for the weekend.
The government fund the school but its basic funding and as an example the two ladies who cook in the kitchen stretch that funding so that it helps feed in the evening.
The charity account has a standing order which they get each month of €200 to buy treats like cold meats and cheese, biscuits and deserts (all a luxury in their eyes)
The government do not fund the home. It is owned by the Catholic Church and volunteers help to keep it going.
Heating didn't even exist until Bay Radio did a huge fund raising event about 12 years ago and we now have heating for all of the home but the gas bill is horrendous which we try a pay for them. There is no money and apart from the Masons who help us out I am not aware of a regular amount that keeps the home afloat. It's a struggle and this year we are struggling big time.
I don't want to get into the politics I just want to help them as we alway have. Think I took my eye off the ball this year and didn't realize how bad things were !!
