About the OHS Esports Club

Orion High School is a rural school in Orion, IL with an average of 320 students.  OHS prides itself in providing a wide range of educational and extracurricular activities and opportunities for each and every student.

Last year a number of students expressed a desire to start an Esports Club.  This small group expanded to nearly 30 students throughout the course of the year, and we were able to put together 4 teams that competed in the video games Overwatch, Counter Strike: Global Offensive, and Splatoon.

We currently compete through the High School Esports League and had two very successful seasons last year.  The kids are beyond enthusiastic; however, the problem we are currently facing is a need to purchase additional computers able to run the games during online competitions.

Last year we managed to fundraise over $3,000 between this GoFundMe and other activities. However, we are still in need of more funds to finish obtaining the hardware and peripherals necessary to accommodate a growing group of interested students.

What will this fund?

All money raised through our GoFundMe page will go toward the building of gaming computers and the purchase of peripheral items, such as keyboards, mice, monitors, and headsets.

We have put together the cheapest and most convenient possible options for building our own PCs.  Each LAN box PC will run us approximately $500 to build.  You can see the specific specs and parts that we're trying to obtain here: OHS Esports Parts List.

Last year we managed to get enough money to build 6 desktop computers. We would like to build another 6 this year to accommodate our growing numbers, and every dollar donated will go a long way to making that possible!

What are esports, and why should kids be playing games?

The modern conception of esports have evolved a lot over the last decade. The term esports refers to competitive video gaming. It has quickly become a legitimate sport, and there are now colleges giving scholarships for top players.

Video games have a negative connotation to them. Some people think they are a distraction and make kids lazy. Other say that esports are nothing like actual physical sports.

This view is a bit unfair as esports can foster many of the same skills as in traditional sports:

1) Build teamwork & leadership skills
2) Develop mental strength and endurance
3) Strengthen communication and form a sense of community
4) Enhance focus and personal drive

What do I get from donating?

Ultimately, your money will be an investment in a growing program that is providing an outlet to a group of students, who many of which do not go out for traditional sports.  The more we can find ways to engage our students outside of the classroom and reinforce the importance of keeping passing grades in order to participate, the better chance we have of helping these kids succeed for the future.

We'll be posting updates and pictures along the way.  All of our students are looking forward to this brand new opportunity.  Thank you for your time and consideration!
