Orchestral Journey to Spain

“As many of you know, I also conduct the "Oregon Arts Orchestra" and we are embarking on our 3rd European Concert Tour. This summer we will be traveling to Spain and Portugal to perform on the Granada Fringe Festival with additional performances in Lisbon and Madrid. Our previous tours have taken us to Austria, Italy and the Czech Republic.”

I have been asked by Cindy Petty and the Oregon Arts Orchestra to join them on their tour to Spain and Portugal July 6-16, 2018. I know…Sounds pretty awesome, right?
Life is all about timing.
This past year, my parents and I made the decision to sell their house in Apache Junction and buy a home together as living on their own with a home of their own to care for was becoming a bit difficult; both physically and financially. After a couple months of hard work getting their home ready to list, we decided to go ahead and put it on the market. To our surprise, their house sold in less than an hour after putting the “For Sale” sign in the front yard and by mid-July we were closing on a home in Ahwatukee.
As is always the case when buying a home, there were a few “surprises” that needed to be addressed; a water leak in the wall between the bathrooms, a very poor repair in one of the showers, painting, clean-up, etc…You know…House stuff.
All of this has left me short of cash. I don’t regret any of it as it has made life so much easier for my folks and I love having them here with me.
When Cindy sent her email asking about interest in going on this orchestral tour of Spain and Portugal, my first response was to decline as I did not have the $4,500 needed to go. Being the savvy person she is, Cindy came back with a few suggestions; one of which was this Go Fund Me campaign.
It feels odd doing this. I was taught that you make your own way and don’t ask for charity or help. If the timing of all of this had been different, I wouldn’t be here, asking for your help. But something my mother taught me is that, “You should ask…The worst anybody can do is say no.”
So, here I am asking for something that has been a dream of mine for most of my 50 years. I have never been to Europe and the possibility of going the first time with an orchestra is more than I could have hoped.
