We launched this project in October 2016 with a small fund raiser at Portrait Society Gallery that included a talk by architect Jim Shields. This year, in 2019, we've developed partnerships with Feast of Crispian, a veteran's organization; collaborated with a writing class at Marquette University; and launched an On the Wing chapter via the Sisters Project, Benedict Center.
With your support, we will journey into 2020 with enough funding to not only carry-on, but to bring individual artists to our locations for workshops and demonstrations.
On the Wing provides sketchbooks and pens/pencils to homeless/at-risk individuals who are invited to fill the sketchbook with drawings, notes, stories. When the sketchbook is complete, it is purchased back for $50. The intent is to give voice, visibility and a lasting legacy to an often misunderstood and marginalized population. The sketchbook class provides both a community and a private moment of creative focus.
Some of the sketchbooks purchased through the project (now numbering over 100) will be part of a bi-annual exhibition and will be auctioned to raise additional money for the next and continuing phase of the project. We also plan to initiate a public-access library where the sketchbooks can be stored.
We need $10,000 to put 100 sketchbooks into the world over the year. Each sketchbook, from start to finish, costs about $100, including the $50 fee we pay each participant.
All of the money raised goes toward purchasing sketchbooks, pens/pencils and small paint sets, arranging collaborative relationships with shelters and other non-profits who serve diverse populations, running a class at House of Peace, administering and promoting the project via a part-time coordinator, and funding the purchase of the finished sketchbooks.
-A $10 donation purchases a sketchbook.
-A $20 donation purchases sketchbook and pen set.
-A $50 donation pays one participant for their sketchbook.
-A $100 donation completes the full cycle of one sketchbook.
-More than $100 says "YES: Great idea to integrate the art world and marginalized populations in a shared endeavor to tap the power of authorship and invention. Sometimes, a simple gesture, like signing your name, underscores a sense of self. Think what a whole sketchbook might do!
