Annika's NMO Recovery Fund

On October 19, 2017 my wife Annika Onosson was admitted to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg and diagnosed with a condition called neuromyelitis optica (NMO), which affects the nervous system. NMO has a variety of outcomes - in Annika's case, she became paralyzed below the neck, and lost all feeling below her ribcage.
The neurology team here conducted two rounds (five treatments each) of plasmapheresis to remove the damaging antibodies from her system. She was placed on steroids and immunosuppressive medications. After the initial round of plasmapheresis, Annika regained some movement in her shoulders and upper arms, and some feeling in her legs.
After concluding treatment, Annika was moved to HSC's Rehab building at the end of November, where she has been receiving extensive physiotherapy and other services. During the time since then, she has regained substantial strength and mobility, although no one knows exactly how far that will go, as individual NMO patients have very different outcomes.
Annika was discharged at the end of April, 2018. We had to have a number of renovations done at the entrance to our house to facilitate wheelchair access, and the donations we have received here helped immensely with that, along with the support of the Canadian Paraplegic Association.
